I know two couples, both partners with the same name and had a conversation about one couple that I thought was about the other couple. It was only at the end that I figured it out.
And at some point, isn't choosing someone because they are NOT fascist something to vote for? It was enough for Portuguese and Hungarians, to name just a couple. Hard not to imagine Orban still being in power if that was America, or Ventura winning the presidency.

Absolutely, but people have to start somewhere, and getting them out of power is a good place. Then if the people put in power don't do things right, vote them out as well. And keep voting them out until they fix up. Because it SHOULD be enough to be "not the fascists," at least as a start.
If the way things are now isn't enough to get them to vote, nothing will. Wars, disenfrachisement, ICE abductions -- but those are things happening to others, leaving most Americans fundamentally unaffected. No reason for them to care enough to vote. If not now, never.

So true. As a journalist, every piece I filed was just written. First draft. Done. Write it and send it. An amazing editor said to me, "First word, best word. If you are telling a story, tell the story." And that's how I wrote. I chose that word because that word came to me. Onward.
As I told writers for years in our newsroom, "Just write that shit." Writing is easy. A writer getting out of their own way is what makes writing hard. That writing is hard is one of the biggest boondoggles ever. People know what they want to say. Just start typing and stop thinking.

Language is the question. In one newsroom meeting a younger editor was talking about the use of "unhoused" vs "homeless." Nuance. I don't know if it is, in the case of pols, donor speak or putting things in terms that work in headlines, etc. where people say, "Oh. Yeah. I get it."
It was really fun to watch. They played like wee Basque demons.
But if you jist talk right people say a politician is not saying the right thing, or not talking about a thing in the right kind of language. Rock and a hard place.
