We caught a bit of a sled hockey game a few weeks ago after skating, and you could see the little wheels turning in his brain as he put together the whole ‘sports are for everyone’ thing. If it was soccer or hoops, I’d probably be less hands on, but mens hockey is so toxic.
But if he also sees me playing as part of a community that embraces everyone, then even better. I fucking hate that the bigots get to push everyone else out of sports. Sports are unifying, they’re healing, they bring people together.
The thing that always put me off hockey in the past was how ficking toxic the mens game is. Now that the kid is obsessed, I want to make sure he sees that you don’t need to be like that to play organized sport. If he can see me playing, too, hopefully that’s a positive for him.
As the kid is starting U6 hockey this fall, I have decided to find a beer/adult league to join, and of course Madison has the largest LGBTQ+ league in the US, the Madison Gay Hockey Association. Priority is given to members of marginalized communities, but I’m hoping they have space for me.
