They’re telling me a great empire will be destroyed if I attack Persia. Even the oracles who don’t like me very much, very nasty, they all said to me, “Sir, it’s one of the great empires, and it’ll be destroyed. And all because you attacked Persia.” That’s what they’re telling me.

I'm recruiting for #JuniorRollerDerby opportunities. Open to adult + junior officials. BG check req'd.
I prioritize supportive, learning-oriented #RollerDerby officiating. Grow as a newer official (Colorado Chaos), or develop your excellence with a worldwide crew (postseason). Links next!
I want email, forums, and #RSS in the same client, but _not_ forced into an IRC-style experience.
I want a universal messenger offering a chat UI, a timeline UI, a forum UI _at the user's discretion_, over any platform. That's the holy grail of free software, for me. Liberate data from platforms.
Ultimately, Matrix is 1/3rd of what I want. It handles messaging well, _pace_ my gripes above. But when Matrix bridges other systems, it tosses them all into the same IRC-style interface. It squashes all threading paradigms into one.
The setup process (using #Tuwunel) really isn't bad, but it's very much not designed for declarative setup. There's a lot of back-and-forth between the terminal and the client copying YAMLs - yuck.
Resource consumption is very acceptable for my use case.
But: clients constantly lose their own read/unread state. Emoji sometimes sync, and sometimes don't. And room-state changes are so noisy it's hard to find actual messages.
I've been hosting a local (non-federated) #Matrix server for several weeks now, mainly to use bridges for a unified messenger.
It's brilliant, but maddening. Two-way message sync works _really, really well_, although backfill is a little inconsistent. No more 3 Electron clients for me!
i have just gotten off a productive call with sauron where i laid out our requests
- nazgul bodycams
- morgul knife must remain sheathed unless suspect is determined to be carrying the one ring
- shelob will be the new point of contact
Dear Media: people who vote for Donald Trump, especially after Jan 6, do not actually care about “following our nation’s laws.”
They’re just authoritarians.
Laws are to be used on the people they don’t like. History backs this up pretty hard.
Hope this clears things up a bit.
As tens of thousands across America protest the violence that ICE sows with impunity, federal agents shot and killed another person in Minneapolis today. ICE terrorizes our cities. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE.

BREAKING: Immigration officers are asserting sweeping power to enter homes without a judge’s warrant, a memo obtained by AP says.
I gleefully use "pleonastic" and get a lot of odd looks for it.
The problem with being a fan of classic literature is that you end up knowing so many fantastic words that basically never come up in everyday conversation. Do you have any idea how rare it is to get the chance to drop an "illimitable"?
So to be clear we have actually reached the point where NATO states are deploying tripwire forces to deter *another NATO state* from invading *another NATO state.*
I struggle to communicate the strategic and just regular insanity of this moment.
This is appalling: Top DOJ officials are actively pushing for a criminal investigation into the widow of Renee Good, leading prosecutors to quit en masse, NYT is reporting.
Who in the White House ordered DOJ to do this? That's the next thing to establish.

This to-do item did not age well.
On the bright side, I can check it off now.
Ppl forget that AI doesn’t change some basics:
1. Evaluate on a single metric and engineers game it (we are smart enough)
2. Code is increasingly promoted by AI
3. The single best eng contribution can be… not shipping code!
4. A 1-character change can have massive impact
Etc etc
Tailscale SSH makes my $25 Linux Chromebook usable. Anything beyond its little Celeron just gets ssh’ed to my desktop, from anywhere.
Door-to-door raids also began in Minneapolis today, in about as brazen a repudiation of the fourth amendment as one could make. An amendment which exists because of the British doing exactly this in the colonial/revolutionary period.

Let us hope.
I think one of the great realizations folks need to have is that today the cause of liberty and the cause of tyranny are both global. We rise and fall together.
I hope the Iranians achieve their liberty. I hope we defend ours.
I've published a new version of my Jam Timer reference manual, for #WFTDA, #JRDA, and #MRDA #RollerDerby officials. This version updates for the latest docs, corrects issues, and adds more citations to source documents. Available as web, PDF, ebook; Creative Commons-licensed, and editable.
This is going to catch me flack: it's what people who don't know what good writing is think is good writing, and without understanding what makes writing good.
I just launched the open beta of Stave (stave.app), a free-forever and open source app I've built for #rollerderby officiating signups and staffing.
Stave offers a form builder, cross-league calendaring, a smart crew builder, and email templates. Training videos on the homepage!

COMING SOON: Open Beta of Stave, a free and open source signups & staffing platform for #rollerderby.
Something that I have been thinking about with attribution of "PhD level intelligence" or "PhD level expertise" to a machine is that it reflects an increasing trend among these AI bros and their sycophants to want the products of highly skilled training without actually doing any of the work.
More relevant than ever
All of these violent, lawless ICE officers terrorizing communities and hiding their faces weren't just hired this year.
It's why dismantling ICE as an agency was so important and remains so. These people are unfit to be public servants if they hate the public.
So this is cool.
