And I want to be clear — this isn’t new conceptually but this phenomenon has MORPHED in the last few years to be different than what it was.

You can see this in fandom culture, you can see it in how *comments* are left on fanfiction in a way that’s completely dissociant from previous etiquette.

And an expectation that there will be demands on you / your team to change elements of your work, constantly.

And these demands will be frequent and vocal, depending on access. And you’ll have to make a choice on when it’s necessary to listen to improve or dangerous to chase.

It’s interesting

But there was a time where I genuinely think working with an audience was actually incredibly sustainable.

Now, it’s been really illuminating how I think that’s not so subtly changed. Working directly with an audience requires a lot of backbone and a strong creative direction to see it through.

And it’s further interesting how that shapes expectations for peers or cohorts in that medium.

This week alone, I saw it happen to a manga, a handful of indie games, an upcoming finale of an indie animated series.

With indies, proximity to community is necessary to get your work out there.

One of the Internet phenomena that fascinates me is the proximity to creatives that social media allow (and we enjoy) but the rapid growing entitlement from audiences due to that proximity.

It’s also been fascinating to watch what games or comics get influenced by the proximity, or even promote it
