*TW: cult talk, CA, mass violence* (1) This is assuredly going to be a controversial one as far as Batstories go, but what I see is a darkly tragic, long brewing outburst from religious indoctrination that isolated two specific children. The trauma that’s been explored through these characters is an extremely isolating one that involved gr**ming, and mind you, Kate wasn’t even the main target of abuse like Beth was. Taking all that and combining it with Beth’s death, signaling the cult’s focus to Kate would lead to all kinds of paranoia, desperation, and yes, out of character behaviors. What happens in this issue deeply reflects the real story of Ricky Rodriguez and the abuse he endured under The Family. I don’t want to belittle his story by further comparing it to this superhero comic where Kate jumps off a bridge and onto a moving truck, but religious, deliberately isolating trauma like Ricky’s is a deeply uncomfortable topic that should be presented to the world in more accessible ways that focus more on the victim and what they’re experiencing emotionally & psychologically

(2) as well as the consequences of these types of powers that easily are able to get away with this kind of abuse. I think the inevitable inclusion of Kate’s failure of a father in this specific issue is interesting too, like he’s forced to bare witness to the consequences of his sore lack of parenting. I genuinely can’t tell you how Kate should recover from this or if she’s even able to. It’s uncomfortable to think about how she’s going to eventually process her actions next issue, but I hope there’s some sort of reprieve. It’s hard for me to say I feel empathy for the organization but she is clearly not lucid either and needs a healthy release & grounding (pls Renee 🙏)
