when you read cultural injunctions from the past, you have to remember that some of them were written by crazy people even by the standards of their day, like this shit is.
This reminds me of how the director of the first Silent Hill movie changed the story from a father doing his damnedest to save his daughter to a mother doing it because, by his estimation, he couldn't see a father being as protective and loving enough to go to such lengths as a mother would.
