Relentless thatching, tight mow, followed by generous application of soil mixed with seed and fertilizer in all the bare spots.

Water in the morning and / or the evening to avoid evaporation.

Iron is a miracle. Kills boss and turns your grass a deeper green. I recommend Ironite— can get it pretty much anywhere. But you have to water heavily for 2-3 days after application.
