👋We’re currently looking for new members.
One of our Community Councillors has recently stepped down after moving out of the area, and we’re keen to bring in new voices from across the community.
If you want to get involved in local issues and represent your area, please get in touch!
Do you live in Bruntsfield, Marchmont, Sciennes, Merchiston, Churchhill, Polwarth, Shandon plus surrounding areas such as Morningside, Grange, Tollcross, Fountainbridge, Gorgie and Dalry? Complete this survey from @banzaiedinburgh.bsky.social on the future of South Central Edinburgh!
🔊 💻 We want to engage more with the community so we’d really value your thoughts:
• Would some meetings being online (or a mix of online and in-person) make it easier for you to take part?
• Are there better ways for you to hear about what we’re doing, or to share your views?
Let us know!
👮 Policing
Police Scotland provided a written update. Theft remains the most common issue locally, though levels have been falling.
🚲 Transport & Clean Streets
Updates were noted on Leith Walk works, loading and servicing, and other local issues.
📣 Engagement
We discussed how to reach a wider cross-section of the community. If you have ideas, we’d be glad to hear them.
🏘️ Housing in Leith (PBSA / visitor use)
We discussed concerns about the balance between homes for residents and the growth of student and visitor accommodation. There was interest in working with other community councils on a Leith-wide or city-wide position.
🚧 Elm Row
A barrier is now in place closing the old downhill cycle path behind the bus stop. We’ve welcomed this as an important safety step. We’ll be following up with the Council on signage and next steps.
🧵 1/ Hey everyone, this is a quick recap of the points discussed at the last council meeting:
🚶♂️ St Mark’s Path / Powderhall
The path remains open with a controlled crossing during construction. There may be short disruptions at points.

📢 LCCC March Meeting
🗓 Monday 16 March
🕖 7:00pm
📍 Nelson Hall, McDonald Road Library
Residents and businesses are welcome.
Agenda includes policing, licensing, planning, transport & clean streets, parks, plus an Open Forum where you can raise local issues.
Details: leithcentralcc.co.uk/reports
We’ve suggested simple interim steps that could help while final works are completed:
• painting over the old cycle markings
• clearly directing cyclists onto the new route
We’ll continue to follow this up and report back when there is progress. Let us know how the layout is working in practice.
Leith Central Community Council has been raising this issue for several months.
We have:
• raised it repeatedly with Council officers
• escalated it to the four ward councillors
• asked for interim safety measures
So far there has been no visible change on the ground.
🚶 ELM ROW CYCLE ROUTE – UPDATE
The new cycle route behind the Elm Row bus stop has been built.
However the old downhill path is still open and marked, so cyclists are still using it. Because of the slope, riders can approach the bus stop area quite quickly.
🧵
These issues are also being discussed as part of the Leith Local Place Plan, which will help shape planning policy for the future.
We’re keen to hear residents’ views - let us know what you think?
Our starting point as a Community Council is that:
Homes in Leith should primarily serve people who live here.
We’ve therefore developed:
• a position on PBSA developments
• criteria for responding to STL licence applications
• concerns about the growth of aparthotels
At the same time, we’ve seen a rapid increase in accommodation aimed at visitors or short-term residents, including:
• Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA)
• Short Term Lets (STLs)
• Aparthotels
These developments can have significant impacts on housing supply and community balance.
🏠 Housing in Leith
Leith Central Community Council has been looking closely at how different types of accommodation are affecting housing in our area.
Leith is one of the most densely populated parts of Scotland, and demand for housing continues to grow.
🧵
Broken pavements at from the ground level.
Last month, I met Council officers, @leithcentralcc.bsky.social, & NT Broughton CC to assess issues & results of pavement parking along Leith Walk.
While work's underway for poss. new loading provision & physical protection, a team will run the length of Leith Walk from 23/3 to fix loose paving.
