when I first bought this I played it over and over for a while. I immediately envisioned where I lived at the time.

no longer in the pool. opened a new beer. feeling this one too:
sitting in the pool. drinking a beer. DJing for myself off of YT. my best chose so far:
the Joy Division cover we didn't know we needed

the song that sealed the deal for me with Etta James: youtu.be/Bcus42ihkTI?...
@rxgau.bsky.social: "Unbeknownst to white people, she was Soul Sister Number Two..." www.robertchristgau.com/xg/cg/cgv108...
the cover of Etta James: The Chess Box (2000).
Deep Listening Day #96 — Etta James: The Chess Box (2000). @rxgau.bsky.social dubbing Etta, Soul Sister No. 2 nails it. I started listening during college and she has been my second favorite female singer of the post-Rock & Roll era ever since.

the cover of R.E.M.: Reckoning (1984).
Deep Listening Day #95 — R.E.M.: Reckoning (1984). I probably prefer Murmur, but this was a nice way to close out our dive into '84 underground rock. my faves are in the middle of side one - So. Central Rain and Pretty Persuasion. I don't listen enough.

I'd go with Erotica, but I also like the debut and Like a Prayer. still Immaculate Collection is the one I'm most likely to pick when I'm in the mood for Madonna.
the cover of Hüsker Dü: Zen Arcade (1984).
Deep Listening Day #95 — Hüsker Dü: Zen Arcade (1984). this one was a little rough for Mary Mac. I had forgotten how hardcore #ZenArcade is. it's been a while. I skipped a few songs near the end but I had to hear my fave - Turn On the News. still does the trick.

the cover of Minutemen: Double Nickels on the Dime (1984).
Deep Listening Day #95 — Minutemen: Double Nickels on the Dime (1984). been far too long since I last listened. I think I forgot how many good songs are here. an excellent album. probably the band I most disappointed not having seen live.

the cover of Meat Puppets II (1984).
Deep Listening Day #95 — Meat Puppets II (1984). my first "dose" of Meat Puppets. my fondness for this album knows no bounds. for those that don't know, the Kirkwood brothers performed 3 of these songs with Nirvana for their MTV Unplugged in NY performance.

the cover of The Replacements: Let It Be (1984).
Deep Listening Day #95 — The Replacements: Let It Be (1984). a true classic from my favorite band of the era, featuring Paul Westerberg, the greatest songwriter of his generation. my personal faves - Androgynous, Unsatisfied + Answering Machine.

the cover of Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs (1999).
Deep Listening Day #94 — Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs (1999). a late 90s, pop music tour de force. I'm familiar with all of it, but this might be the first time I've listened to it from beginning to end. these tunes provide endless pleasure.

yes indeed
the non-Immaculate Collection songs from the debut I would add are Burning Up, Physical Attraction and Everybody.
the cover of Madonna: Madonna (1983).
Deep Listening Day #93 — Madonna: Madonna (1983). I had been under the impression that disco was dead, but apparently not. it was back with a vengeance. personally, I didn't really start opening up to #Madonna until Into the Groove. it was hard not to take notice though.

the cover of Chic: Real People (1980).
Deep Listening Day #93 — Chic: Real People (1980). my favorite #Chic album, certainly the one I've listened to the most. total class. it was Open Up showing up on a #NormanJay #GoodTimes compilation that got me to pay attention to a record I already owned.
#MusicSky #DeepListening #RealPeople
the cover of Donna Summer: Bad Girls (1979).
Deep Listening Day #93 — Donna Summer: Bad Girls (1979). start here. it's her best album, but I skipped side three because I know better. overall a solid listen. I like the first two sides - it's where the hits are but side 4 is more my cup of tea.
#MusicSky #DeepListening #DonnaSummer #BadGirls
the cover of Sylvester: Stars (1979).
Deep Listening Day #93 — Sylvester: Stars (1979). his cover of #BenEKing's I (Who Have Nothing) is the stand out of the 3 Hi-NRG tracks, but the slow and lowdown I Need Somebody To Love Tonight written by #PatrickCowley is the song I can't get enough of.
#MusicSky #DeepListening #Sylvester #Stars
the cover of Dr. Buzzard's Original "Savannah" Band (1976).
Deep Listening Day #93 — Dr. Buzzard's Original "Savannah" Band (1976). an album that took me until my late 30s or early 40s to embrace. it wasn't the hits that kept me coming back for more., it was the laid back vibes of Sunshower.
#MusicSky #DeepListening #DrBuzzardsOriginalSavannahBand
the cover of Ben Webster: King of the Tenors (1957).
Deep Listening Day #89 — Ben Webster: King of the Tenors (1957). the perfect way to finish off our jazz-filled afternoon and early evening. a relaxed, less modern sound than most of what we listened to today. I found it beautifully soothing
#MusicSky #DeepListening #BenWebster #KingOfTheTenors
the cover of Sonny Rollins: G-Man (1987).
Deep Listening Day #89 — Sonny Rollins: G-Man (1987). a jazz albums I might have listened to the most. it came out shortly after college. I might be crazy but I think a lot of rock fans could dig this. it is quite muscular + has a strong driving groove.
#MusicSky #DeepListening #SonnyRollins #GMan
the cover of Herbie Hancock: Empyrean Isles (1964).
Deep Listening Day #89 — Herbie Hancock: Empyrean Isles (1964). I know Cantaloupe Island b/c of Cantaloop by Us3, but I never listened to the album before today. I enjoyed it. I'll be back for more. Mary Mac dug it too so she might ask...
#MusicSky #DeepListening #HerbieHancock #EmpyreanIsles
the cover of John Coltrane: Olé Coltrane (1961).
Deep Listening Day #89 — John Coltrane: Olé Coltrane (1961). I first listened to this last month. it grabbed my attention instantly. as it did on this listen. this time I really tapped into the sheer beauty of McCoy Tyner's Aisha. not my last listen.

the cover of Miles Davis + 19: Miles Ahead (1957).
Deep Listening Day #89 — Miles Davis + 19: Miles Ahead (1957). I knew Miles pretty well by the early 00s, but I don't recall what led me to buy this and I can't say if I responded immediately. I think it grew on me and it turns out I still love it.

too early to make me hungry again
in general I'm pleased with the breadth of selection up to this point. I've truly enjoyed out Deep Listening. I think Mary has too. there have been a number of pointed comments along the way like, "oh! I really like this!" they always makes me smile. (6/6)
given my recent listening habits House + Techno are way under represented with only record so far and only another 5 that I would place under the overly broad rubric of Electronica. I'll leave it up to you to decide how well women are represented -- about 3:1 male to female so far. (5/6)
I thought I would look at some of our stats so far: By The Decade -- 50s: 1 / 60s: 14 / 70s: 31 / 80s: 18 / 90s: 11 / 00s: 11 / 10s: 9 / 20s: 6. By Genre: Punk/Indie/Alternative: 32 Rock: 17 Soul: 14 Hip Hop has not been represented at all yet. that will change at some point. (4/6)
