We like to joke that if The Economist had an in-house industrial/hardcore techno band it would be called "Structural Reform"

Amazing analysis of car casting choices, and how they relate to character and plot. (Alas, none of my friends who are movie nerds are also car nerds)

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

Trump dropping his own memecoin means he has the wrong people in his ear re crypto policy.

I’m now getting very concerned about the Trump presidency.

Something that hasn’t been much discussed - creating a bunch of personal memecoins opens the door to secretive foreign buyers trying to curry influence with our leaders. If you hated hunter biden’s anonymous art sales, you should hate this too.

Basically, we used to have an informal rule that presidents wouldn’t start or run businesses that could pose a conflict of interest. Creating a bunch of memecoins and defi protocols opens the possibility to rampant violations of the emoluments clause. Not to mention the obvious COI given the fact that trump can set crypto policy.

Dear
@realDonaldTrump
:

Please fire whoever recommended going forward with the Melania launch today.

1. They don’t know what they’re doing.
2. They cost you a lot of $ and goodwill.
3. They don’t have your interests in mind.

I’m not sure people quite grasp how much of the crypto world is reacting to the Trump memecoin launches.

DoD MWR Libraries

Some exciting news from @economist.com. All American service members—all 1.3m active duty, and those retired—now have free access to The Economist's website, thanks to a deal with DoD. If I'm not mistaken, you can access it through DoD's library pages: www.dodmwrlibraries.org. Happy reading.

AI could help unearth a trove of lost classical texts Computers could let archaeologists read hundreds of burnt scrolls from a Roman library

Fine explainer by @tomstandage.bsky.social about how computer scientists are slowly beginning to "read" the texts in ancient Pompeii scrolls which were so charred by the volcano that buried the city that the scrolls can't be opened without them falling to bits.
