I have very fond memories of this day, and I would like to seize this opportunity to acknowledge my PhD supervisors Philippe Rygiel and Fabrice Bensimon who showed me unwavering support, as well as Neil Davie, Emma Griffin, Manuela Martini and Anne Winter in the jury for stimulating discussions.
It's been exactly a year since I defended my PhD at the @ensdelyon.bsky.social !
As anything French, it can be divided in three points: 1) trying keep the stress at bay by spending time in nature in Parc de la tête d'or, 2) D-DAY! and 3) well-earned unhealthy reward the day after.
Happy and honoured to attend the European Historical Economics Society conference at the Uni of Hohenheim as a finalist for the Gino Luzzatto PhD prize! I will talk about how studying pedlars can better our understanding of commercial change & the State's economic behaviour towards the poor.

L’Ecole de science politique de la Sorbonne se déclare en chômage technique ! Face à la situation budgétaire dramatique de nos Universités, qui met en péril nos missions de service public, nos métiers, et l’avenir de nos étudiants, l’Ecole de science politique de la Sorbonne se déclare en chômage technique et appelle nos collègues et étudiant-es, de l’Université de Paris 1 et d’ailleurs, à faire de même. La situation budgétaire nationale et locale de nos Universités est aujourd’hui catastrophique. A Paris 1, nos unités de recherche viennent de perdre sur décision rectorale 50% de leurs budgets de recherche et nos UFR 40% de leurs budgets de fonctionnement, sans qu’aucune discussion sur le périmètre exact ou les options possibles de ces coupes n’ait pu être menée dans nos conseils centraux. Ailleurs, du fait de la mise sous tutelle budgétaire de très nombreuses Universités, ou du fait des avis négatifs de la campagne d’évaluation de l’HCÉRES, des formations sont contraintes de fermer, et les moyens alloués à la recherche, à l’enseignement et à gestion administrative de nos formations sont remis en cause. Nous sommes au bord de la cessation forcée de nos activités. Car ces coupes brutales ne sont pas des économies ponctuelles, dues à une situation spéciale : elles constituent l’aboutissement de plus de quinze ans de précarisation des Universités. Elles mettent aujourd’hui concrètement à l’arrêt nos activités de recherche. Elles obèrent gravement notre capacité à enseigner et à animer la vie scientifique de nos disciplines, à former et à professionnaliser nos doctorant-es, à faire rayonner notre université à l’international ; elles cassent nos infrastructures de recherche et de formation, elles remettent en question nos enseignements et les conditions d’étude de nos étudiants :

In de weekendbijlage van @gazetvanantwerpen.bsky.social verscheen een stuk over mijn doctoraatsonderzoek. De stad is vandaag enkel wat ze is omdat zoveel Antwerpenaren in de 19de eeuw hun deur openstelden voor arbeidsmigranten. Met drie in één bed, of met 10 op één kamer, was geen uitzondering.
