The remake of The Haunting. If they had exhumed Shirley Jackson, hung her corpse from a branch, and beat it with sticks like a pinata, they could not have disgraced her memory more.
Today was a beautiful day to mow my lawn which I then ruined by actually mowing my lawn.
the best killer baboon of recent vintage was in Ad Astra of all things. Killer baboon IN SPACE! I don't know how they failed to sell that movie to the public...
So maybe a project I was thinking wasn't going to happen is going to happen for me. It's been literally years since I last drew a comic. This one is horror. More about it later.
For ideological reasons, I moved from Substack to beehiiv and couldn’t be happier. I’m happy to talk to anyone who wants to make a move.
Leaving Substack is like planting a tree.
The best day to do it was years ago. The second best day is today.
I have to stifle whatever professional envy I may have whenever I look at her work. She's astonishing.
Crash Davis tells Nuke LaLoosh "Don't try to strike everybody out." in Bull Durham

Since baseball season is underway, a reminder that baseball is or ought to be anti-fascist.
And possibly "Ice Ice Baby"
Clearly, Foreigner's "Cold as Ice" is ripe for this.
Some years ago I saw a Mexican film called A Monster With A Thousand Heads about a woman who took up arms against their health care system. Now, it is a relic of the past. Good for Mexico.
The movie is good btw. I think its on Kanopy if you're curious. I bought it on disc ages ago.
Micronauts (the Bill Mantlo/Michael Golden version), Doctor Strange, and Master of Kung Fu. Pretty much all the same week because they were all in my stocking at Christmas.
I've been listening to Ray Charles a LOT lately, but that's not from my teens or even my lifetime given that I'm not listening to his later stuff. Particularly into his "country" album and everything on The Ray Charles Story at the moment. He really was a genius.
Re-upping my Free Stuff Thread. Lots of free, RESTORED silent movies! Also read the replies, there's even more free stuff there.
Look at the women at NASA.
They are the ones pushing the boundaries of science, solving problems most people can’t even understand, and carrying this country forward, while our politicians right now posture and stumble through talking points.
And they are doing it all with joy.👇
Prometheus just gets stupider and stupider as it goes. The most elaborate Alien rip-off ever made. A $250 million Hentai movie. Sure looks great, though.
Two hot takes from the competition list the Cannes film festival. 1. WTF do these people see in Lukas Dhont? A totally insufficient filmmaker, but in official competition with every new film. SMDH. 2. Jane Schoenbrun's new film is the lead off for Un Certain Regard? I've slipped sideways in reality.
That movie is a bad time. Keaton should have received her Oscar for it rather than her other 1977 movie. Maybe she did; I dunno.
Also probably going to see the new Christian Petzold movie, Miroirs No. 3, tonight. That's a guy who has worked his way onto my "see his films at first opportunity" list. One of the best living filmmakers in the world today. No idea what his new film is about, which is probably a good thing.
The new film is from the creators of Cam, and THAT film was both elegant and merciless, two qualities I love in a horror movie. So I guess I'm seeing Faces of Death this weekend. SMDH.
If someone in 1996 had told me that I would be willing to pay cash money to see a film titled Faces of Death, I would have laughed myself into a hospital ward. I mean, I made a lot of money renting those films during my stint as a video store owner, but they definitely aren't *good*. Yet here we are
Alas, I am a diabetic, so rice or corn pastas are a fever dream for me.
Most bean "pastas" have the texture of rubber bands. Blech.
Zoodles my not taste like pasta, but at least they aren't unpleasant.
That's very Don't Look Now.
Multi-genre reader here with (little "c") catholic tastes. Currently reading a hard boiled crime novel from the 40s. Next up is a Daphne Du Maurier Gothic.
Yeah. It's a banger.
It takes a LOT to get me to sympathize with the Catholic Church, but Great Sonny Jesus, this administration managed it.
These are the worst people in the world.
Sally Hemmings was 16 when the 46 year old Jefferson got her pregnant, so this is debatable.
There was an interview with Woo after the film, and that clarified why Sally Yeh's character was so completely useless in the film. She took off to Switzerland after the first bit of filming and they had to reevaluate the core plot. Interesting.
I went to see The Killer last night. Never seen it in a theater before. I had forgotten how many car chases there are in that movie. Includes the usual sentimentality one expects from a Woo movie, but he utterly destroys it with an ending so bleak it makes you sit around in silence for a while.
