Edelgard: The ball is tomorrow. I have no worthwhile memories of such events, yet I'm still looking forward to this one. Hubert: As am I, in the sense that I look forward to destroying all of the unworthy suitors who will inevitably swarm Lady Edelgard. Ferdinand: I will admit, Edelgard is adorable. However, when it come to elegance on the dance floor, I am superior! Dorothea: You're not a bad dancer, Ferdie. But you do have some moves that are...hard to watch.

Yes, that is exactly the reason why he is avoiding him. Not because he’s unsure how to approach someone he grew to care about deeply during the academy days. Who, him, the guy who can approach anyone with a suave smile and easy-going mindset? Nobody can intimidate him; he’s one of the only people to challenge His Highness’ ridiculous suicide crusade. So of course if he wanted to reconnect with Dedue he could with ease! He can do it now, obviously! It is just… just… Why kid yourself when you have been doing that all your life? You’re afraid to approach Dedue because you’re afraid of having a genuine relationship with someone. When people try to get to know the real you, you panic and avoid them at all cost. You push them until they trip over and can’t get back up, unless you reach out to help them. When you became friends with Dedue back then you were mortified that you continued down that track. How many times did you beg for something to end it, because you were too afraid to push him away, because you respected him and knew he deserved better? Then you got what you wanted: he’s missing, presumed dead.

“I would hide in the thicket and wait for help to arrive,” Dimitri said. “It is foolish to take on so many enemies by yourself.” Byleth didn’t quite smile in response, but her body relaxed, letting go of the tension it had held while she waited to hear that very answer. “Very good, Dimitri. Always, always, rely on others when you know you need help.” Felix rolled his eyes as Dimitri straightened in his chair, his pleasure at the praise evident. Felix looked at the hint of satisfaction in the professor’s eyes and rolled his eyes harder. He’d warned her, but she wouldn’t listen. There was nothing he could do if she insisted on trying to tame the boar. “I am sure Annette would have answered correctly if she had truly taken the lessons you have taught us to heart,” Dimitri said, his pleasant smile at odds with his words. Felix glared at Dimitri’s back, letting out a huff of disbelief. Unbelievable. He couldn’t fathom how the boar had the gall to lecture anyone about not rushing ahead into battle, given he constantly did so on their missions. He’d have done exactly the same as Annette had described, worse probably given that strategy wouldn’t even cross his mind in the rush to quench his bloodlust. Felix saw Annette’s posture deflate as she sunk into herself. He opened his mouth to defend her—only because of how dishonest the boar was, lying and hiding his true nature from the others, no other reason than that—but was stopped when Annette spoke first. “It was a trick question!” Her face flamed as she saw everyone staring at her. “Well, um, actions speak louder than words, right? Out of the two of us, who’s the one who always obeys the professor’s instructions in battle and who’s the one who rushes ahead? Huh? Did you think about that?” Felix hid a smile. Thankfully someone else could recognize that the boar needed to be called out on the stench of hypocrisy that hung around him.

WIP Wednesday. Based on an idea @cyanspade.bsky.social posted on here a while ago that I couldn't get out of my mind—Dimitri and Annette vying to be Byleth's favourite student (for entirely different reasons 🤭)

Ashe walks up to Ingrid as she's packing up after practice and gives her a quick kiss. She hurriedly zips up her bag and put on her jacket, Ashe grabbing her bag for her, and the two wave bye to the others as they head out. Despite the indecipherable and interchangeable romantic entanglements that they all have going on, Annette, Mercedes, Dedue, Dimitri, Sylvain, and Felix all think in unison: "I wish I could kiss Ashe. Ingrid is so Lucky"
