honestly i use flstudio which probably doesn't have the best workflow especially for inexperienced users but you could try fing around with some cool filters and stuff in Audacity for a start!

its good fun! ive done only a little and there are all kinds of sound design out there, from digital sound design with synths and filters and stuff, to more acoustic with mics and contact mics.
i recently picked up a contact mic have been having lots of fun putting shit on a metal pan and etc myself
