Super pretty samples! What will you do with them now Mingyue? 😊

⛰️Field stats⛰️
1 measurement = 4min⏳
1 plot = 6 light conditions = ~38min⏱️ (personal best pace - no rushing - usually 45-50min).
1 day = 10 plots = 1 plant community🥬
We have 5 plant communities in total.
1 field season = 4 measurement rounds of the 5 plant communities = 1200 measurements🔃
Catch up: Part 2 (July 26th, dry heath) - #CarbonFluxes in control & warmed plots ( #OTC ≈ +1 °C), rapid weather shifts ⛅, plus plant height 🌱 and other environmental drivers' measurements.

Catch up: Part 1 (July 25th, mesic meadow) - #CO2 and #CH4 measurements under different light conditions using a LI-COR @li-corenv.bsky.social gas analyzer.

A study from Sybryn Maes and the #ITEX network published in @nature.com shows a 30% increase in #EcosystemRespiration due to passive #warming with #OTC. But what about #NetEcosystemExchange? That is what I try to answer with my #LightResponse set-up.

How do we measure #CO2 and #CH4 exchanges from alpine-Arctic #tundra #ecosystems? - Part 3 ⛰️🌤️
Same day, same ecosystem type, new view - and a lot of mosquitos (can you spot the thorough repellent application?)
See Parts 1 & 2, and thread for more details! 👇
Congratulations Sara!! 🥳
Finally, the different light conditions, using shading nets to reduce radiations and a lamp from #Heliospectra to increase them, allow us to standardize the measurements despite variable weather conditions.
While measuring carbon exchanges in one plot, I measure soil temperature, soil moisture, and plant height in the following plot to get a better understanding of the mechanisms driving the changes in #carbonflux we observe with warming.
The small greenhouse on the right is an Open Top Chamber (OTC), it warms the air temperature by 1 degree. They are like small windows into the future. Measuring #CO2 and #CH4 exchanges inside and outside the #OTC helps us understand how #climatewarming will impact #carboncycling in the tundra.

... when the weather changes so fast? ⛅
Here is how, in a control plot and a passively warmed plot of a dry heath at #Latnjajaure field station, 100m a.s.l. near Abisko, Northern Sweden, on July 26th, 2025.

Here you can see me seal a transparent chamber to the ground, multiple times, under different light conditions. This chamber is attached to a #LI-COR gas analyzer, which records changes in concentrations of #CO2 and #CH4.
How do we measure #CO2 and #CH4 exchanges from alpine-Arctic #tundra #ecosystems?
Here is how, in a control plot of a mesic meadow at #Latnjajaure field station, 1000m a.s.l. near Abisko, Northern Sweden, on July 25th, 2025.
The picture shows a tripod with a LED-lamp producing the right wavelengths for photosynthesis, hanging underneath it. Below the lamp is a transparent chamber sealed to the ground, connected to a trace gas analyzer from the LI-COR brand. This set-up measures CO2 and CH4 concentrations within the chamber, that are emitted/absorbed by the ecosystem which is boosted by the extra 1000 PAR from the lamp.
Trying out my new set-up in the forest behind my house🌲🏡 The lamp from #heliospectra is increasing the photosynthetically active radiation #PAR on the ground by 1000! Now I can measure #CO2fluxes at different light intensities no matter the weather 🌥️ Looking forward to bring it to the #ArcticTundra!
Higher shrub density impacts soil composition, decreasing the pH and phosphorus availability in soils as well as increasing the soil organic matter and C:N ratio.
Grasslands are changing in the Alps, not only above-ground, but below-ground too! 🥬 Check out our newly published study, with Lucía Laorden‑Camacho and my previous colleagues at Universität Innsbruck and Université Grenoble Alpes!

🌿 We need to raise the profile of #bryophyte ecological research 🌿 (and also a bryophyte emoji!)
In this opinion piece, we as a group of #ECRs outline barriers in bryophyte research and provide recommendations to overcome them across institutional levels & disciplines.

📢New paper🚨Excited to share our new review paper in @plosclimate.org on Browning events in Arctic ecosystems! 🌿❄️ A wonderful collaboration, brilliantly led by @garethphoenix.bsky.social. 🌿@naturvetenskap.bsky.social @vetenskapsradet.bsky.social
Hi :) I would love to be added to the Starter Pack if it is still possible! Thanks ⛰️🌱❄️
