About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages

A friend moved from Toronto to NYC. He said that he'd see people in NYC who did impressive things, but when he met them, they seemed boring. His theory was, in T.O, you'd have to be a remarkable person to do these things. In NYC, a lot of the people doing Big Things are just

His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven. His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and well set. His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.

a color coded image by Freya, comparing the summation and capital pi notation in math, to their equivalent in code using for-loops. The summation notation sums a set of elements, while the product notation multiplies a set of elements.

Note that Freya is keenly aware that neither the math notation nor for-loops are fully explained by this image, and that this is only a subset of the use cases, so luckily you don't have to explain that to her, in case you were considering doing that!

All you need is Wide Events, not “Metrics, Logs and Traces” This quote from Charity Majors is probably the best summary of the current state of observability in the tech industry - a total, mass confusion.

Engineering Management: The Pendulum Or The Ladder Last night I was out with a dear friend who has been an engineering manager for a year now, and by two drinks in I was rattling off a long list things I always say to newer engineering managers. Th…

Hmmm. I think everyone with any interest should be a manager at least once. It teaches you so much about how to be a better IC.

I do think there's a path to switch back and forth (I did).

Famously, Washington ordered the inoculation of his army against smallpox in 1776-1777, making it mandatory for all new recruits to be inoculated

Historians posit the “pox Americana” was one of the key factors in the defeat of the Continental Army’s invasion of Canada in 1775-1776

I'm playing with some bus transit data in my spare time and this post on Visualizing MBTA Data from 2014 has given me lots of inspiration (HT @puntofisso.bsky.social)
