Who's the BRU for? The BRU is for bus riders and their allies - for all Kansas Citians who want to improve the place they live and love and be there for their neighbors. It's for the single mom, the person trying to get to their job, the elderly, students, and children. It's for the working class, those trying to get back on their feet, the friends and family trying to stay connected. It's for you. We aren't leaving anyone behind.
Why a union? The traditional role of a union is to organize working people to fight for their interests by leveraging their collective power. Rider and transit unions have followed this model by organizing communities to successfully champion and win better bus systems across the nation. Transit riders are the experts on the needs of the system! From LA to Seattle to Philadelphia, riders unions have fought for and won increased funding, greener buses, reduced fares, expanded & faster service, and so much more. It's time for Kansas City to do the same.
Sound like something you want to be a part of? Join us! We launch this month and begin the work of demanding a fully-funded bus system.
For many years, the bus system in Kansas City has been under threat, leaving bus riders stranded and uncertain about the future of our buses. WE DESERVE BETTER! A new chapter for buses in KC awaits... Follow along at @kcbusriders.bsky.social

It’s people vs billionaires. Show up and defend your city from the oligarchy.

On top of this, data centers destroy our planet and drive up our utility prices.
We need good schools, transit, housing, jobs, and food for our people.
At a time when Kansas Citians struggle to make ends meet, it is outrageous for PortKC to prioritize lining the pockets of billionaires.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai is a tech oligarch lining up behind Trump, supporting authoritarianism so that he and his fellow billionaire cronies can keep getting richer. Tech billionaires like Sundar have enough money to literally buy our democracy – they don’t need another taxpayer handout.
PORT KC: No Handouts For Billionaires! Oligarchs Out of KC!
🤢 The unelected board of Port KC is set to vote THIS MONDAY on a $10 billion bond and 25 year property tax handout for Google in order to build another data center in the area.
This is straight out to the authoritarian playbook: silence dissent by making people scared to speak up.
The Democratic Party should be fighting like hell against these illegal actions by the Trump admin.
This is a bogus, sloppy plan that helps no one. But we have power to stop it and demand something better.
Send a new email to the Mayor & City Council demanding they fix this mess before riders and workers have to pay the price!

As a result of our collective pressure—1000s of emails, hundreds of calls, and direct action—Council & KCATA know that a less frequent, inaccessible bus system is deeply unpopular and harmful to riders.
They claim to have a plan on the table to fully fund buses. They’re lying.
📆 only 7 routes on weekends
⏱️ drastic cuts to frequency
🌜 limited service hours
👷🏾 union job layoffs
♿️ paratransit access impacted
NO WEEKEND SERVICE IS A BUS CUT.
LESS FREQUENCY IS A BUS CUT.
AND BUS CUTS KILL UNION JOBS.
🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨
KCMO & KCATA Leaders think they can play bus riders and workers for fools 😡
KCMO transit funding ordinance #250247 DOESN’T FULLY FUND BUSES.
KCATA announces drastic FREQUENCY, SERVICE REDUCTIONS AND LAYOFFS EVEN UNDER PROPOSED 6-MONTH FUNDING PLAN.

🔊 ERICA FLORES FROM @sunrisemvmtkc.bsky.social TAKES THE MIC
Joint Statement to Mayor Quinton Lucas and KCMO City Council: Reject KCATA Service Cuts and Fully Fund Our Transit Whether we are Black, white, or Brown; East of Troost or West of Troost, North of the river or South of the river, we want our communities to be connected, inclusive and vibrant. As organizations representing thousands of Kansas City residents, we write to express our deep concern about the city's current budget proposal for the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). The current budget you are considering will cut 13 major bus routes and up to 175 good-paying union bus driver and maintenance jobs, as well as reducing frequency, operating hours and weekend service.
It will also suspend the IRIS microtransit program and eliminate the jobs of as many as 100 IRIS drivers. Workers, riders, and our environment cannot afford these cuts. These cuts would create a transit crisis in our city at precisely the wrong moment. As we work to build a more equitable Kansas City and prepare for increased visibility during the 2026 World Cup, dismantling our public transportation infrastructure sends the wrong message about our priorities and values. We urge you to keep our public transit system whole by fully funding KCATA’s budget in the upcoming fiscal year and rejecting any and all proposed service cuts for the transit agency as you finalize the City budget this month.
Our joint statement calling on Mayor Lucas and City Council to reject KCATA service cuts and fully fund our transit.
#SaveOurTransit #MOworkers #DrivingChange #StandUpKC #1u #UnionsForAll
Robust and reliable public transit is critical for the Kansas City area, our Local 1287 members demand the City invest in the KCATA. #ATUStrongerTogether #1u

You can say routes will be saved but if the money isn’t there, the cuts will happen. If not the routes, it will be longer wait times.
Just b/c this wasn’t public until recently doesn’t mean city public works havnt been collaborating w/ kcata for months on plans to gut service
$6.8m is a start but not nearly enough to actually stop the service cuts and worker layoffs
We hope to see more movement on this before the budget is finalized
Join us tomorrow at city hall to make sure elected leaders back up statements with action
