☀️Only half of atmospheric heatwaves trigger riverine ones because high discharge and meltwater act as buffers while low discharge strengthens the air–river temperature link.

Our Perspective by Amber van Hamel and colleagues @cchartierrescan.bsky.social @mariagrundmann.bsky.social @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social emphasizes that climate change will worsen riverine heatwaves, demanding better data and models to address them.

👋 Hi, we are HYCLIMM – Hydrology & Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions – a research group at @slfdavos.bsky.social & @ethz.ch . We study #water & #climateextremes in mountains under #globalchange!
↪️ We’ll share updates on our work & team led by @manuelaibrunner.bsky.social
Meteorological and hydrological transitions are less related than you might think: only 10% and 25% of dry-to-wet transitions propagate to drought-to-flood transitions at a monthly and yearly time scale, respectively.
