Hi everyone! I am recruiting participants for my dissertation study, which explores how Jewish college students understand their identity and navigate campus spaces that may or may not feel inclusive. This study has been approved by Indiana University’s Institutional Review Board (Study No. 27285).

College Students’ Cultural Center Involvement and Civic Engagement In the context of escalating challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in higher education, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between cultural center ...

In other words, students with more privileged identities also benefit from cultural centers, directly refuting the narratives that are being pushed by legislators who argue that these spaces are enacting some kind of reverse discrimination.

👏🏼 Everyone 👏🏼 benefits 👏🏼 from 👏🏼 DEI 👏🏼

We found that students who engaged with cultural centers reported higher civic engagement skills and frequency of engagement across all racial, gender, and sexual identities. This was true not only for students with minoritized identities, but also for men, white students, and straight students.

When I started this project 2 years ago, I kept wondering: “Why does higher ed stay silent on issues affecting Jews?” “Why are campus responses to antisemitism so poor?” Ultimately, we can’t address or fix what we don’t understand. We can’t understand something if we refuse to learn about it.

I found:
- Only 2 articles focused primarily on Jews and/or antisemitism
- Jewishness was often framed as only religious, ignoring racial/ethnic dimensions
- When listed as a demographic variable, it was rarely explored in depth
- Research on Jewish identity in higher education is topically narrow

I’m so excited to share my latest publication in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education! I analyzed 50 years of top-tier higher ed journals to see how often Jewish identity and antisemitism were discussed and how Jewishness was framed in the research.

Yay but also, can the universe give me at least 24 hours for a breather? 😂

I'll share what I conveyed to a grad student recently:

There is much that remains unknown and out of our control right now. The future is extremely uncertain. Multiple job markets have already imploded. Focus on what you can control. Can you finish the dissertation? Then finish the dissertation.

Given the attacks on trans communities in higher education right now, it feels especially important to share this research. We look forward to sharing the third article in the series soon! (4/4)

We also found that trans students were less likely to feel that sharing pronouns is a common practice at their institution. Finally, trans students were also less likely than cisgender students to feel that instructors and staff ask about and use students' gender pronouns correctly. (3/4)

In this study, we found that roughly 40% of students, regardless of their gender identity, do not know whether it was easy or not to update one's name or pronouns in their student portal. (2/4)
