As someone with a background in ecology, that "not essential" label is both baffling and infuriating

I can tell it was written by bureaucrats bc biologists *know* to be careful with value-related wording

Doctor who (up until the 14th) is my benchmark: most of it is grounded but there's room for the occasional technobabble handwaving, and the rare "can't explain that" that stands out *because* it's not following the rules

Bioshock or Abyss are also good examples

As some have said it does depend on the themes, but as for personal preferences I lean toward *some* realism but it doesn't need to explain every single thing with physics that would require a PhD.

Space is a vacuum and gravity and all that, but we don't need to tally the water cargo required

As someone who also loves sci-fi/cyberpunk visuals, I can absolutely sympathise with the hatred for anthro faces when the time comes to make any sort of helmet for them

And don't EVEN get me started on diving gear
