Pavement parking is a big problem in Heaton.

There's a good route to the city centre from Heaton, but not to schools and hospitals to the north and east.
It's now 10 years since the scheme to improve routes was launched with half the planned changes to Heaton Road being implemented.
Ask election candidates when they will get that finished.
With elections happening soon it's a good time to ask any candidates you speak to what their plans for tackling air pollution in the city are.
A still day yesterday shows the levels that persist.
We can't rely on windy days to blow pollution away from roads and into your house to fix the problem.
A view from the top deck of a bus of a local high street clogged with traffic. There is no cycle infrastructure, cars are parked on the pavements, and the bus is being delayed by a long queue of private cars.
While local councils don't control public transport, they do control the highway network. On the run up to the local elections, ask candidates wanting your vote what they would do to make YOUR;
*️⃣ neighbourhood HEALTHIER 🏡 🌳
*️⃣ active travel journeys SAFER 🚴🏼♀️🚶🏽♂️
*️⃣ public transport journeys QUICKER 🚍 🚆
That 36km could be extended a bit by finishing of the section of Heaton Road that has already been designed.
📅Earlier this year the Government announced local councils would receive new powers to prohibit pavement parking.

🗣️With elections next month, ask your candidates what they'll do about this.
Cycling is quick, cheap and healthy. More cycling means less traffic congestion, and it's good for the planet. It's good for everybody! Here are three things Newcastle City Council could do to make it better for everyone: Connected network - join together existing cycle lanes and tracks, so the routes are safe and easy for all School streets - keep traffic away from school gates at the start and end of the school day, so its safer for children to travel by bike Shopping locking - every parade of shops should have some bike stands, so you can lock and leave your bike while you go shopping Ask your candidates what they think about these. Let them know how important they are to you, and to your vote.
🗓️On 7th May local elections will be taking place in Newcastle.
📋We have put together three key points that we would like to see parties back in order to improve cycling in the city.
🗣️Ask the candidates you speak to what they will be doing to improve cycling in the city after May.
Our annual blog on traffic crash injury in #Newcastle.
In 2025 there were 3 fatalities, 114 serious injuries and 414 slight injuries on Newcastle’s roads, an average of 10 people injured every week.
This is too high - we need action to create a Safe Pedestrian And Cycling Environment in Newcastle.
A busy morning across TV and radio as we talk about this news from Active Travel England.
Local transport minister, Lilian Greenwood MP will join us at our UK #WalkingSummit this morning to set out this new guidance.

Our friends at SPACE for Fenham have written an article that addresses some of the points heard in opposition to the proposed changes to Fenham Hall Drive.

The pleasant spring weather this week is very welcome, unless you want clean air to breathe near busy roads.

📢 The council is proposing changes to Fenham Hall Drive that could see the street becoming much safer for cycling.
✅ Proposals include 1.5km of protected cycle lane and better crossing points.

#NUFC home match tonight.
Still lots of spaces in the Car Parks in town.
The majority of fans must be travelling by means other than the private car?
Thanks to @spaceforheaton.com for the data.
There's no safe level of air pollution.
📉 This street saw a drop of 500 vehicles per day when the Safer Heaton trial scheme was in place.
📈 The scheme was removed, traffic volumes returned.
💥Now drivers are having crashes on the pavement.
It's fortunate there was nobody trying to walk along the pavement at the time.
This street leads directly from Heaton Road where a scheme to make things safer has been half build, despite being designed and consulted on in a process leading back to 2016. Making streets safer for school pupils requires decisions to be made and action taken now with no more decade long delays.
Almost everything could be better here. This should be a street that prioritises people over vehicles. Huge parts of the street are hatched off to make things easier for drivers. There’s nothing that makes things easier for pedestrians and the thousands of people attending the school.
This street passes a school with over 2000 students and prioritises vehicles. People are hemmed in to narrow pavements which are blocked by bus shelters, side roads have fast, sweeping entrances, crossing points have tiny islands, and the cycle lane is narrow, painted and has a rough surface.

I've gone through the numbers to work out what the new Tyne and Wear Metro £2.50 fare cap will actually mean for you.
Some big savings on longer journeys, but passengers only going 1/2 zones will actually see day ticket prices going up 6-7%.

This type of vehicle is regularly causing problems on Heaton's streets and there's no sign on anything being done to tackle it.
The first image shows pavement that has been broken by vehicles replaced with concrete to better support them parking on the pavement.
Good news for anybody for cycles along the city stadium cycle path. 👇
A screen capture of the electronic voting results at a meeting of Newcastle City Council showing 22 Yes, 28 No.
At last night's council meeting there was a motion on winter maintenance.
An amendment to 'Investigate gritting those parts of major arterial pedestrian/cycle routes susceptible to freezing' was not passed, as more than half of those councillors present voted against it.
📣 Parents. If cars make your walk or cycle to school feel unsafe, that's not okay.
We need your photos of the school run! The more people can see how awful it is out there - and how unsafe it is for our children - the more power we have. DM pix or tag us in a post.
