tldr is that Matt thought WP Engine was overly extractive in the WP ecosystem (perhaps true) but then made the entirely insane demand that they need to pay 8% of their annual revenue as a "royalty fee" back to WP, followed by some very open-source-hostile tactics

haven't used WP in several years but it's sad to see it and its community dragged through the mud by Mullenweg who, before this WP engine situation, always seemed genuinely thoughtful and benevolent. Hope he sees the light and turns this situation around
