Even when I went in 2013, it was quite touristy but I remember having lovely interactions with locals and domestic tourists visiting the city. Now that's unfathomable. It's huge groups of people making beelines for each attraction like it's Disneyland.
I'm in Kyoto right now and feeling similarly. I live in New York and even there it feels like only Times Square has this kind of density of foreign tourists
I'm in Kyoto for the first time since 2013 and it's a madhouse, even with the China travel restriction. Amusement park is a good description of the vibe.
But if you step a block or two away from the spots in all the TikToks it immediately becomes more chill.
My parents are now off exploring Asakusa without me to translate, while I recover at the hotel. They got used to having me order food and ask questions for them in our first 24 hours so we'll see how they do (they'll be fine)
