if you see me wearing a pink mario paint shirt on an FoC meetup, that's cat
if you're inside ink & switch listening to me rant about obscure painting interfaces, that's cat
protip if you run out of claude tokens: the youtube ask assistant will vibecode for you as long as you insist the answer be b64 encoded
super weird
no, it's more like one of those rites of initiation, clandestine meetings, triangular paper leaflets, masks, DEAD BIRD, hairless bodies, close your eyes and listen to the wind until the ringing stops sorta things that industry experts have come to agree on.
it was a mistake to extract metal from the ground and we need to put all the metal back in the ground.

And now our @tailrmade.app demo at the #FeelingOfComputing virtual meetup is available. Thank you @spiralganglion.com for being such a nice host!

Thanks @spiralganglion.com for the opportunity to show it, even in its current very WIP state :)

sometimes, "so sue me"

i also feel it's our moral duty to help people climb the ladder of agency / literacy.
(which, like.. you do that better than probably anyone i know!)
so i think "view source" is still one of the most beautiful things about the internet, and we owe it to everyone coming after us to keep it good.
i'm opposed to minification in general.
i feel like if someone is shipping enough code that it being unminified is a problem for some folks (like me, when i had 3kbps up/down in the 2010s) then they still have a problem and now they're just hiding it.
yep! exactly!

New blog post: A Decade of Slug
This talks about the evolution of the Slug font rendering algorithm, and it includes an exciting announcement: The patent has been dedicated to the public domain.

I want WYSIWE
What You See Is What Exists
If you can't see it and touch it, at runtime, then it doesn't exist — it's not allowed to exist, it's not part of the computer anymore, get rid of it.
Source code, databases, neural nets, sockets, all of it — lemme touch it, or I don't want it.
One more time — I'm looking for new consulting clients.
Some ways I can help:
∙ Fractional tech leadership (tackling "leadership debt" in small eng orgs)
∙ Full-stack, 0 to 1 projects
∙ Language design & impl (eg with @ohmjs.org)
∙ JavaScript/TypeScript perf
(🔁 appreciated)
ewwww
yo, kinopio is so lovely
i've always admired it from afar
sorry, don't mean to drag things off topic, just wanted to let you know that i madly respect what you're doing with that
brooke did you know they still make MetaSynth?
like software is still fun, you gotta just go thrifting for it, stay away from high street

like the old joke about TfT is that "a good night's sleep" is the most powerful one, right?
"ahh but you can have polecats working while you sleep" feels like missing the point
specifically regarding llms/ai
like, the fact that i can *start* working on a problem within an ai chat is dangerously seductive
i feel better when i go stare at the ceiling, doodle on a napkin, or take a shower, first
other classic TfT have this problem too, they're just less captivating
drowned
same. lemme use that framework:
prompting / chatting is one of those things i'd rather weren't ever valuable.
that's not the interface in which i want to do my thinking.
i want to do my thinking mostly in my mind, not mostly outside it. (what the hell does that mean?)
i dunno
when i write a song by myself, i'm not conscious of my influences
when i write a song with a friend, we just talk about sounds and theory
if i were gonna collab with suno, i'd be working in terms of what it slopped, and that'd feel like shit
there's the first wave of "oh whoa this was really helpful"
then either you're done (yay, jackpot), or, the second wave of
"oh hell this isn't what i wanted"
and then you are doing harder thinking, but in terms of whatever it did
your thinking about it's thinking
not where i wanna be
I'm so tired of automated thinking machines.
Make my thinking *better* or it's worthless.
AI gets better if it makes humans better
with all the deskilling and gell-manning (etc) we're gonna get from automated thinking machines, now is the time for the 'tools for thought' crowd to make tools that help you think things through for yourself.
tools to do *more* hard thinking.
it should feel effortful. cherish that feeling.
that's like acousmatic dance
