In Scotland, nature is struggling.
But this year we have a huge chance to help it recover with the Natural Environment Bill.
We need our leaders to know how much Scotland's nature matters!

The 2022 summer in UK saw temperatures hit 40°C for the first time and left firefighters stretched, with London Fire Brigade having its ‘busiest day since the Second World War’
We know climate change is not a future threat but current reality

Think solar farms are bad for nature? Think again. Those designed for nature in East Anglia are teeming with birdlife - including threatened species. A new study reveals why. ⤵️

Climate ‘whiplash’ behind #LAfires increasing exponentially around world
- Global heating means the atmosphere can drive both extreme droughts and floods with rapid switches wrecking the lives of millions

In 2006, we determined that climate change would drive "consistent shifts in Santa Ana events from earlier to later in the season" and said this "may significantly increase the extent of CA coastal areas burned by wildfires, loss of life, and property."
Here we are today.... @umairfan.bsky.social
The world added 600 GW of solar in 2024 -- twice as much as we’d ever installed of all technologies in a single year says Ember's @cleanpowerdave.bsky.social

Cars in the U.K are up to 55% larger today than they were in the 1970s and there are twice the number of cars on the U.K's roads as there were 30 years ago, but the media are still running articles claiming that a handful of cycle lanes and LTNs 'cause congestion' in London...🙄
"It took 68 years for the world to reach 1 terawatt of solar PV capacity. It took just two years to double it"
That's how exponential growth works.
And we were worried that solar growth might stall, but I think batteries will help it to continue.

Repost this if you’re old enough to remember when they tried to convince us that “global warming stopped in 2008” (or whenever).
Yet another reminder that climate change increases the rainfall during intense storms, increasing the risks of flooding and casualties.

Global sea level is now rising twice as fast as 30 years ago
Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt more, adding more water to the oceans, which also expand as they warm
We caused this by burning coal, oil and gas, and deforestation

The joys of AI… it might be ‘artificial’ but it’s using a lot of real resources like water and fossil fuels.
A single 100-word email generated by an AI chatbot using GPT-4 requires 519 milliliters of water, a little more than 1 bottle.

THIS IS A HUGE ACHIEVEMENT:
The EU now generates more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels.
Graph from Nat Bullard and data from Ember.
With all of August now in, 2024 has effectively tied 2023 as the warmest August on record in the @CopernicusECMWF dataset.
August 2024 was 1.49C above preindustrial levels, and 2024 is now virtually certain to be the warmest year on record.
One of these lines is not like the others
Canada's wildfire emissions last year were more than all but three countries.
And, as per IPCC rules, Canada does not need to report wildfire emissions in its inventory. But as many will note, wildfires are getting worse because of climate change, so some of those emissions are anthropogenic (1)
Just your friendly reminder that virtually no one buys petrol or diesel cars in Norway. They have become the horse & cart of cars...

Usually, forests remove about 1/4 of the world's annual CO₂ emissions.
In 2023, the carbon sink collapsed.
As a result, even though CO₂ emissions only increased < 1.1% in 2023, the growth rate of CO₂ in the atmosphere shot up by 86% compared to 2022.

~1/3 of emissions come from food systems, but 8 billion people eat food! So, not an easy fix and no one solution will fix it. Here are a bunch of ideas from farm to fork to forest. 🧪 #FoodSystems
