In his classes, linguist Max Mangold always emphasized that "dialects" were languages with their own grammar, vocabulary, and history and should be respected as such, not considered "defective" versions of the official language.

Our parents lived under the real threat of nuclear war. We grew up with it in movies. Now it's back, because of one man. Every elected official needs to act. This is a humanity thing. This was the line.

The PictureThis app is good at identifying plants in all stages of growth. Here I checked it on new crab apple trees grown from seeds planted last autumn. Part of my project to provide more edibles for local wildlife.

Honeywort, another of the frequent flowers in our fields at this time of year, is a historical source of blue dye, currently enjoying a bit of a return to that use as chemical dyes are considered with suspicion by some.

Hanging out in the cork oak grove with my apprentice goat guardian, Quartus, is something I really must enjoy more often. The loudest sounds are birdsong and the buzzing of pollinating insects.

This year's bounty of wild asparagus has fed us well, with many jars of fermented asparagus pickles to extend that pleasure well into the summer.

The hawthorn bushes that spread after the plow was stilled are among the first to bloom here in spring; that dramatic display is now past, but I look forward to the bright red berries to follow later this year. There are many beneficial uses for this plant!

The long-blooming sage-leafed rock rose is the most common flower at this time in the poor soils of the fields around our cork oak forest, more so since we stopped unnecessary plowing of the area to leave the wildlife undisturbed.

I have grown rather fond of the PictureThis app as a companion on my walks through the fields and forests where I live. In a few cases, the information it provides has prevented accidental poisoning or alerted me to possible culinary uses.

I somehow managed to miss nearly all of the Artemis saga. It wasn't until a few days ago that I realized there were astronauts out there somewhere. But even in space they couldn't escape the orange menace.

My old Serra da Estrela mastiff is 11 years old now, with joints largely destroyed by arthritis. On most days since late last autumn, it's a victory if I can get him to walk 50 meters. On this fine spring day he insisted on joining us for a 1+ km tour of the farm perimeter. A strong spirit.

Having worked as an economist (a bit of an outcast economist who insisted on asking the questions we weren't supposed to ask) for decades, this one speaks to me.

My standard for elderly fitness is my grandfather, who could still crush macadamia nuts in the shell in his hand in his late 70s thanks to isometric exercises. My recent fencing obsession has helped a lot: weight loss, blood glucose way down, greater mobility and endurance than I've had in 15 years.

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm... damned tired. Why is wood so much harder to chop than 30 years ago? Enquiring puppies want to know.

One of the best strategies for escaping honeydew chores is to take my goat guardian apprentice to the fields for training. This enabled me to read several chapters of a trashy vampire romance novel with no more distractions than an occasional bite on the leg from a bored puppy.

Title: Easter Egg Hunt techniques inspired by great detectives

Panel 1: Sherlock Holmes.
Deduce the exact location of every egg from seemingly unrelated details without leaving your room. Send your amazed sidekick to fetch them.

Panel 2: Jack Reacher
Hit the garden hard and fast.
Take no prisoners
Get back on the road.
This approach results in a thrillingly intense hunt, but very few intact eggs.

Panel 3: George Smiley
Meticulously assess documents, people and motives. Then scrupulously collect the eggs and dejectedly wonder if any of it was worthwhile.

Tradwife movement ‘attracts men who are hostile to women’ The strongest predictor of support for women staying at home and deferring to their husband is not, as researchers expected, chivalry but ‘hostile sexism’

"Among young American men, the strongest predictor of support for the tradwife lifestyle was not gallantry but hostility towards women"

Apparently this is not what researchers "expected". Which makes one wonder: had these researchers thought about it for 30 seconds?
