The writers did avoidants so well with Nick. Judy is really his only real friend in his entire life and he doesn't want to lose her. But at the same time he never knew how to express that he cares, except running away or hiding it behind jokes:

Still obsessed, and still getting used to Procreate. I miss basic features like group clipping mask and color pick from layer only like why aren’t they a thing yet
