IDF commanders told Haaretz that southern Lebanon is being demolished “like Gaza.” The declared goal is to prevent civilians from being able to return.
Both are war crimes punishable under international law.

This is what Israel has done to Bint Jbeil, my hometown in southern Lebanon

Hello friends, I wrote for Nation Magazine about how Iran has a reasonable legal basis for regulating the Strait of Hormuz and those that argue otherwise are reinforcing double-standards and imperial international law-making www.thenation.com/article/worl...
I first want to thank you a final time give you my review of the class for your website. " In this class, Elia explores how history is at once a material reality, an understood societal convention, and a personal experience. He masterfully describes how History is carried with us, socially, spiritually, genetically, mentally, physically and politically. Ultimately, he demonstrates that the ghosts of the past are alive in the present. I highly recommend taking the course if you wish to understand history not as a series of droll facts and appended myth but as imagined and felt experience. - James."
Spots are still available for the upcoming May class on modern Lebanese history and politics

Today, the future in Lebanon looks quite dim. We once again have to rely on Israel's benevolence and American assurances (each as reliable as Lebanese electricity).
Internally, polarisation is higher than I can ever recall, with each side creating scarecrows of their opponents.
April 13 is the anniversary of the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil war, which began in 1975. For The Public Source, I wrote about the twisted nostalgia many of us feel for those dark days:

"We sold the Gulf states a security guarantee, armed them to the teeth, triggered the threat we promised to protect them from, and now the weapons don't work. Other than that, great deal!"

“Israeli strike kills infant girl in south Lebanon during father’s funeral” — headline that tells you all you need to know about Israel’s war on Lebanon
Text extract from Guardian article: "For two years after the October 2023 attacks, Netanyahu undermined ceasefire talks with Hamas in Gaza and blocked potential deals by adding new conditions or changing his mind at the last minute. He also tried to stall negotiations by assassinating Hamas leaders involved in the talks, and even ordered a brazen Israeli airstrike on Hamas officials meeting in Qatar, a US ally, to consider a ceasefire proposal that had been submitted by Israel and Washington. Despite Netanyahu's obstinance, Israel continued to receive unconditional political support and tens of billions of dollars in US weapons, under both Joe Biden's administration and Trump's. Is it any surprise that Netanyahu concluded that Israel can bomb virtually anyone and anywhere in the Middle East, with impunity? By late 2025, Israel had attacked Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar and Yemen that year - without losing the flow of US weapons or Washington's political cover at the United Nations and other international institutions. Of course, Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, which killed at least 70,000 Palestinians and instigated a famine, paved the way for Israel to flout international law."

Confused why Pakistan is playing such a key role on an issue in the Middle East? I’ve got a book about that - and its free if you want it.

The UAE tried to strong-arm Pakistan by demanding an immediate repayment of a loan. It also took a hardline stance against the ceasefire. Today, the UAE is unhappy about being excluded from the Islamabad Talks, 3 weeks after UAE FM AbZ said on X, 'We will never be blackmailed by terrorists.'

A lot of people just assumed the issue of Palestine would go away and it hasn't. It's fine that your assumption was wrong but maybe a little introspective?

All that remains of the southern Lebanese village of Aita al-Shaab.
I think the number one, two, and three reasons for Israel's public relations crisis is that it's doing this to four separate countries simultaneously

The death toll of Israel's attack on Lebanon yesterday is now at least 303
1150 injured so numbers are likely to go up megaphone.news/cards/%D8%AD...
Israel has released more evacuation warnings for Dahiyeh, though the map and areas listed is growing. They included Jnah this time, where hits have happened in the past but without warnings.
Evacuation order (in Arabic) by the Israeli military for residents of multiple neighborhoods in Beirut’s southern suburbs
Israeli military just issued its latest (illegal) evacuation order that includes almost the entire southern suburbs of Beirut. Yet another tactic to sow fear and chaos ahead of committing new massacres in Lebanon.
People need to understand how bad, how devastating, how unjustified Israel’s bombardment of Beirut is — it’s not just yet another of the strikes that have become routinized. Catastrophic civilian harm and human suffering that simply must not be shrugged off as normal and forgotten. Stop the madness.
