Disabling voice chat entirely is viable for crew play, people generally use the ping system pretty well.

My advice is to cycle between playing rook, solo, and full crew, as they all help you practice different aspects of the game. Solo can be really good for objectives or picking up specific salvage. Rook for fundamentals and learning maps. Crew for when you want to PvP and/or Get Your Money Up.

Claymores also have a short delay so there may be circumstances where you can back away or run through.

On the plus side, those are static, so they will hopefully only blow you up on your first few trips through those areas! Or unfortunately in the middle of a firefight when you're not fully paying attention.
