An image of C. elegans hermphrodite gonad, with DAPI stain in cyan and PH-3 immunofluorescence in red.
My lab released a new preprint today. The work is the culmination of a long term project led by Peren Coskun, Ph.D., who investigated the biological role of the C. elegans glp-1 3'UTR in its endogenous context. Please join me in congratulating Peren!

Professor Sean Ryder: It's time to rock that ribonucleic acid
Can you rock the RNA? Professor Sean Ryder of UMass Chan Medical School's got a book for you.
Sean Ryder, PhD, spoke with Worcester Magazine about RNA therapeutics and how they may treat a wide variety of health conditions in the future and the quest to separate facts from misconception: direc.to/oinD

A conserved triple arginine motif in OMA-1 is required for RNA-binding activity and embryo viability
A monthly journal publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed research on all topics related to RNA and its metabolism in all organisms
I am grateful to share that the latest research paper from the lab is now published in RNA. This work was a wonderful collaboration with Francesca Massi’s lab. Please join me in congratulating co-first authors Asli Ertekin and Sharon Noronha.

A professor stands at a podium in a Universalist Church, speaking to audience members in the pews.
The cover of a book titled Everyday RNA: The future of RNA medicine. The cover is pink with a single stranded nucleic acid cartoon.
The professor signing a copy of his book at a podium in a church.
A projected image on a TV screen of the title slide that reads "GAIN presents "From Cows to COVID (And Beyond): A brief history of vaccines" by Sean P. Ryder, Ph.D.
I gave a public educational seminar on the history of vaccines yesterday sponsored by @gain-indivisible.bsky.social. I encourage all scientists to give public educational seminars a shot. You’ll learn something and you will be surprised (in a good way) by the people you meet.

My son (the wizard), myself, and @repmcgovern.bsky.social at the #Worcester #NoKings rally put on by @gain-indivisible.bsky.social. It was a glorious day to fight the power with my people. Representative McGovern is my guy, 100%. He shows up and he tells it like it is.

Figure 5: Germ layer patterning defects in the mex-3 Δ3′UTR mutant. (A) mex-3 RNAi results in dead embryos with a large expansion of muscle lineage cells (mesoderm, yellow). Control animals develop normally, with all three germ layers present and appropriately patterned. Cytoplasmic (C) green represents GFP::MEX-3 protein, nuclear (N) green indicates endoderm, nuclear (N) yellow indicates mesoderm and nuclear (N) red indicates ectoderm. (B) At elevated temperature, the mex-3 Δ3′UTR mutants form all three germ layers, but patterning appears defective with a moderate expansion of muscle lineage cells (yellow). (C) Fraction of embryos that appear normal versus abnormal binned as in Fig. 4. The genotype and the temperature of growth are shown. CTL is a control for the germ layer background (strain OD1854). All sample sizes and statistical test outcomes are listed in Table S3. Scale bars: 10 μm.

Everyday RNA
Copies of "Everyday RNA" are arriving in the US. I ordered 30 copies—they arrived at my house yesterday. If you haven't pre-ordered a copy, your best bet is to order directly from World Scientific Press . The online retailers won't get them until later.

Why a rare blood cancer has become a testing ground for cancer drug innovation
A model of innovation
In 2013, my father lost his life to multiple myeloma. Now, a variety of new treatment options are extending myeloma patient lives for years if not decades. It's been amazing to watch. Support the the NIH, fight back against RFK, and protect academic research.

Revisionism in the Wake of Covid
A dialogue confronting the premise of revisionist efforts to diminish the pandemic's severity and dismantle public health institutions.
There’s a book from political scientists Macedo and Lee that claims the COVID-19 pandemic was not as much of a threat to public health as was supposed, calling into question the role of expertise.
Here, an excellent corrective to that erroneous position:

Newsweek is reporting the RFK plans an outright ban on mRNA vaccines in the United States within a few months. That's a huge mistake. Please, speak out against those who would derail the most promising technology to curb virus spread since Charles Maitland and cow pox.

A book cover with a strand of RNA on a pink background, with the title, authors name, and publisher.
I did a thing. I wrote a textbook about #RNA. I wrote it so that those without formal science training could understand what RNA is and how it is used in medicine. It releases in the US and Europe on September 8th. www.worldscientific.com/worldscibook...

Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.
While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.
This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.
