Visual Riff: Environment Space and Movement
Space, in some ways, is the guiding element of my photography.
These images reflect some of the varied situations where I am either a participant, an irritant, invisible, or simply dancing along with the rhythms of the situation.
Warren, 76, and Arden, 90, met at a Walmart in West Virginia. Warren later moved into Arden's farmhouse to care for him and his wife, Maxine.
I captured this tender moment between the two men the day after Maxine's passing. It was deeply moving to witness such trust and warmth in their friendship.
On my recent trip to Guatemala, I met Edvin Rafael Sarmiento, 32, a former sugar cane worker who contracted kidney disease 6 years ago, and has been unable to work since. Once again, I bore witness to the devastating impacts of CKDnT, the absence of worker protections, and the tyranny of poverty.
Visual Riff: Shades of Joy
With everything happening in the world, it's hard for many people to feel much joy these days – let alone find shared examples of it. To counter your doom scrolling, I wanted to share images I've taken over the years that capture people experiencing moments of happiness.
By 1983, I was photographing the most prominent celebrities, artists, and entrepreneurs of the time. Five years later, I stepped away to explore my true passion: photojournalism and d... youtu.be/WtEZ8WbYl5s
Visual Riff: Shades of Joy
With everything happening in the world, it's hard for many people to feel much joy these days – let alone find shared examples of it. To counter your doom scrolling, here are some images I've taken over the years that capture people experiencing moments of happiness.
My work lives in the space of candid intimacy. Those unguarded moments of drama, tenderness, or the quiet rhythm of everyday life. Something elemental draws me to these scenes, a pull that the camera has helped me answer, both as a personal hunger and a desire to make images that leave a mark.
A scene from Sibi Camel Mela, an annual festival in Balochistan, Pakistan, 1997.
There are times when I'm photographing in situations that feel overwhelming — I experienced this when I found myself in a remote part of Balochistan in 1997. Back then, Pakistan—and the world—felt different.
Visual Riffs: Skin Deep
"Skin deep" suggests superficiality, but my lens argues otherwise. Every pore, every imperfection, every chosen or accidental mark is archaeology. The surface isn't shallow—it's where everything collides: intention and fate, the self we inherit and the self we make.
"It is hot here. We've come during the hottest time of the year to this volcanic, mountainous, and breathtaking part of Latin America."

These images serve as a reminder that no matter where we live or how different our lives may be, we are all connected by the same inner states of emotion— grief, conflict, joy, hope. Photography gives permanence to these hidden landscapes, inviting the viewer to see ourselves in their experience.

Photographing in Nigeria is always challenging— the camera is often unwelcome, and outsiders are viewed with suspicion. Yet once permission is granted, and acceptance earned, a cornucopia of vibrant visual elements and powerful extremes is opened up for my heart, mind, and camera to absorb.
The Human Experience
A testament to what it means to be human: shared moments of joy, perseverance, and connection.

Visual Riff: I See Myself in You
While interviewing a housing advocate in LA, they mentioned a Mayan proverb, "In lak'ech, hala ken," which translates to "I am another you, you are another me." This resonated with me, so I asked my team and family to select archived images with this theme in mind.
I am thrilled to announce that I'll be a mentor for the Alexia Human Rights Mentor Grant at Newhouse, Syracuse, with a $1000 prize!

I have always felt uncomfortable shooting highly stylized and staged scenarios, but as with life, it's always good to stretch yourself and push to try new things.

A recent article in The Nation reported the deep connection between Olympique de Marseille Soccer Club and its devoted fan base. Pictured here are club supporters and members of Marseilles Trop Puissant cheering on their team during a game at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille, France, 2010 & 2011.

Visual Riff: Festive
Festivity at its core is a deeply human impulse—an attempt to create meaning, connection, and escape through collective expression and rituals. Yet the outward vibrance of celebration can often mask a far more complex inner landscape.
