We noted this on the final game broadcast even before his 23 assists which broke JKidd’s Mavs rookie record, was second most for any player in Mavs history (Kidd - 25) and was just shy of a top 3 rookie assist game in NBA history, Ernie DiGregorio (25), Nate McMillan (25), and Ramon Sessions (24).

Here’s a Ryan Nembhard funfact - his assist to turnover ratio of 3.72 to 1 was the best of any qualifying rookie in the NBA in the last 36 seasons (previously was Brevin Knight 3.38:1). You have to go back to 1989-90 to find a better one by a rookie (Pooh Richardson 3.93:1).

Obviously in the co-rookie of the year seasons there is an asterisk as Grant Hill and Elton Brand were Game Score avg leaders with Jason Kidd and Steve Francis respectively sharing co-rookie of the year honors with those individuals.

Cooper Flagg leads 25-26 rookies & will have the 10th best @johnhollinger.bsky.social Game Score avg since 83-84 for qualifying rookies. The top 25 shows he’s in great company. Since 83-84 only RoY winners who didn’t lead their rookie class in Gm Sc avg are Chuck Person, Mike Miller, Amare & Brogdon

JH’s Game Score tries to quantify production of major counting stats and efficiency in a game. This is just one man's formula (but a really smart one) that weighs certain things certain ways. But it is a worthwhile tool IMHO to consider as a framework for comparing game performances.

His games against Orlando on Friday (44.2) the Lakers on Sunday (39.5) and Charlotte on Jan 29 (40.1) rank as 3 of the top 5 rookie Game Scores since 2010-11!

A Game Score of 40+ is considered an outstanding game and a rare one. For example there have been 30 in the entire league this year.

Cooper Flagg’s Game Score of 44.2 on Fri is the highest for a rookie in the @johnhollinger.bsky.social Game Score available time frame dating back to 1977-78. One of 11 games of 40+ by a rookie

Coop has 6 of the top 10 Game Scores for rookies this yr & was the first to break 40 since Blake Griffin

Great note from the Mavs vs Lakers broadcast on NBC, the first game in NBA history with a teenager and a 40+ plus year old with 20+ pts in the same game. And they did it in the first half alone with 26 for Cooper and 22 for LeBron!

ICYMI on our MavsTV broadcast Friday, the last 4 baskets on the way to Cooper Flagg’s historic 51 point game. The youngest player in NBA history w/ a 50 point game, the 9th rookie w/ 50+ & 4th since 1970 (Brandon Jennings, Iverson and Kareem). A true thrill to call this special and historic game!

Friday night history for Cooper Flagg vs Orlando. First teenager with a 50-point game in NBA history. Cooper scores 51 points!

He is the 9th rookie ever to score 50+ pts, with the most recent 3 prior to Coop being:

In Friday’s win in Portland, Cooper Flagg had a new career best 4 steals (24 pts too). Coop is completing one of the best rookie seasons in Mavs history in terms of disruptive defensive plays. 3rd in combined steals & blocks (131) and on cusp of 2nd. And 2nd in stocks/game (2.1).

It doesn’t mean I don’t recognize that more impactful plyrs are out there (Jokic for ex is avg a triple double). WRT Wemby he’s having a tremendous year too but I wouldn’t say 3.5 apg is “close.” But obvs he has major impact because he can score more, space floor, def rebs & an historic shot blkr

I’m not “making it seem”, it’s a fact that no one right now is combining all of these elements of their games in quite the versatile way Coop is in this current stretch. The cutoffs aren’t arbitrary they match up to the rounded down whole numbers of coop’s current post ASB stretch.

I looked at the whole season in order to have a larger sample size and representation of the season in its entirety.

Cooper Flagg this season:
20.4 ppg
6.6 rpg
4.7 apg
1.1 spg
0.9 bpg

The only other player hitting/exceeding all of those benchmarks this season is Alperen Şengün. 👇
