the players will be fighting the horrors, and yet the scariest people they've fought are "trained soldiers" because I fill them with strategy, tactics, and synergizing abilities that make them punch far above their weight (they also will just recall knowledge on the party. they can also do that)

I like mine super varied! For my current game, each PC's story bosses have a gimmick, and one of them is just MMO fighting. Another is hyper-tactical synergy combos, another is meta-narrative manipulation, and another is initiative shenanigans!

I like my custom fights weird but engaging :)
