A monochrome map of the United States. Fairly visually simple. The main interest is that the states are labeled with IPA transcriptions of their names.
A detail of the map, showing the central Atlantic coast.
A #map doodle: International Phonetic Alphabet transcription of US state names (which I sourced from here: hadarshemesh.com/magazine/how...)

Save the Date SVP 2026. 86th annual meeting, Cleveland Ohio. Huntington convention center of Cleveland. Image of an art deco Cleveland Guardian holding the skull of a dunkleosteus
SVP 2025 program cover. A very dynamic rhynchosaurs dominates the cover. Society of Vertebrate Paleontology 85th Annual Meeting, Birmingham
I'm in a tizzy getting ready for my first ever #2025SVP in the UK, and today I learn that next year it's in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. I can drive there, and stay with family. Irony.

I haven't really had anything to talk about on social media for months, but hey, I'm probably actually going to get to go to SVP in Birmingham UK in November, so that's something.

Shout out to all of the faculty and students who made it through this semester in particular. What a time to be teaching and learning in spaces that are directly under attack from people who benefited from having access to the same resources themselves.

These Fossil Mummies Reveal a Brutal World Long Before T. Rex Lived
Paleontologists have found fossils of Lystrosaurus , an ancient herbivore, that are covered in leathery skin.
From 2022: Among the many fossils studied in this South African outcrop, clusters of four to eight Lystrosaurus fossils were found close together, their bodies spread-eagled, two of them preserving mummified skin.

Inside view through the cut open back of the sheep skull, mostly through the frontal bone. Inside you can see the ethmoid, presphenoid, basisphenoid , and a lot of the partial. Various foramina are highlighted in pink, with the cranial nerves that pass through them listed.
Alright, this is coming together. Cranial nerves, amirite?

In the foreground in the vari-colored sheep skull. In the background, an impressive mess of bright pink powder and paint
The paint touchup is done, so all the cranial bones are IDd. Now after making a huge mess, time to mark all the cranial nerves with Pinkest Pink #culturehustle

A very colorful sheep skull, grinning at the camera from inside a box with random other projects miscellany.
Finally done with coloring all the bones, but I'm too sleepy to go back over and detail. Tomorrow.

A view into a brightly painted sheep skull, with a window cut into the top. The ethmoid, basisphenoid and a bit of the pterygoids are visible, and await paint.
I'm in the home stretch, only 4 cranial bones to paint, and the hyoid. I'm coming for you pterygoid, ethmoid, basisphenoid, and tympanic bulla!

The mandible of a sheep, painted pearly white, on a grey felt base. The yet unpainted hyoid bones rest in the jaw. In the background, the skull is visible, with some big regions of color picking out specific cranial bones. And, my messy workspace.
I'm only 5 colors/bones done, but they were the big ones. I also made this little cradle for the mandible and hyoid. Time for a break

Most of the photo is of Rumi, a fluffy gray cat. He is sitting on a paper-covered table, snuggled against the sheep skull, amongst my painting supplies
He actually took longer than I anticipated to appear once I started.

A lamb skull with an irregular portion of the bone removed. The back of the nasal turbinates, and the brain case are visible. So are all the uneven cutting marks.
So it turns out that cutting a window into the back of a sheep's skull with a rotary tool is way tougher than I expected.
