“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
It costs a lot less to house people.
Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !
Feb 25:
Q: Why does it seem like Black folk don't contribute much to society or science or history? Most inventions seem to be from Europeans? Don't cancel me!
A: Racism. Non-white accomplishments are plentiful, but are often invisible.
Read the whole linked thread.
The thing is, when we had high marginal tax rates on the rich, the rich still had yachts and second and third houses and fancy vacations and really good schools for their kids, so, yes, I think most people who are really very rich would do just fine, and the rest of the US would do better than now.
The bipartisan efforts to demonize and criminalize pro-Palestinian protestors have also contributed to the lack of mobilization of civil society against Trump, and this was EXACTLY what the right wanted when they cynically exploited Democrats' racism/desires to suppress any dissent.
the way to stop people doing nazi shit is to create an environment where doing nazi shit immediately gets you jumped by six guys, do not pass go, ass kicking first and ask questions later. every goth & punk bar on god's gay earth already figured this out in the 90s
Okay, so I’m finally putting a thread together: what is the deep-blue Delaware legislature proposing to do and why is it the most evil thing not directly involving Donald Trump happening in America today?

This is interesting. Continuing to think about the Temple of the White Rat, Bishop Beartongue (who is sort of my template for a Practical Good Person who can see the big picture) is not at all a centrist, but she might be considered an incrementalist.
Because you TOTALLY asked for this… and MapQuest has NOTHING better to do…
We’ve granted you exclusive access to a place very dear to our heart: gulfof.mapquest.com
Think of it as the Upside Down but more... minimalist. Pls share so we can behold your genius (or judge you, lovingly) 😘
Journalists should report the truth the way this judge laid it out.
This is very cool!
And yes, saying "Not everyone can afford to leave the country!" is a valid initial reaction.
After that initial reaction, please consider sharing a link to mutual aid requests for folk that you have personally verified, but do this *on your own timeline*.
Satisfactory?
If the US blocks access to HRT, ADHD drugs, and SSRIs, I cannot begin to describe to you how much all of the tech sector will screech to a halt. The internet is built and maintained by trans people, people with chronic depression, and the neurodivergent.

" In short, RFK Jr. doesn’t believe in the germ theory. He believes in something called the miasma theory."
Oh my God
“The price tag is also equivalent to a year’s rent for a one-bedroom apartment for 1,177 people, which would constitute roughly 80% of New Orleans’ unhoused population.”
I realized today that Trump, Musk, DOGE, Vance, Miller, Vought and their many collaborators have broken so many laws already that they know they have to destroy our government and entire way of life to stay out of jail. This is all or nothing. We should respond accordingly.
Funny how a little bit of complicity doesn’t save your ass … as we’ve been saying because Germany already ran this experiment
i mean, dems are saying the things we want them to say. warren's saying it. jefferies is saying it. wyden's saying it. omar's saying it. AOC is saying it. it's not landing on the front page of any major news website, but they're saying in plain language what's happening here.
i’m beginning to think putting the billionaires in charge of the news media was the wrong idea
The people who think they are good at everything because they are good at coding are also bad at coding.
Any countries whose scientific research funding bodies are NOT currently under siege by their own national leadership would do very well announcing investments in bringing in foreign research talent right now
You say: they shutdown USAID.
You mean: they illegally broke in to a secure facility over a weekend, hijacked sensitive data on vulnerable people and US businesses, destroyed property Americans paid for, cut off resources for sick and hungry families, and fired Americans across the country.
I think Americans, blessed with relatively stable government for a long time, assume there is someone, some adult, who will step in and make things right before the President does anything REALLY bad.
There’s not.
American citizens should not have to enter into a contract with a private company (that’s an X account signup!) to receive government communications
Everyone seems to be framing Trump's freeze on federal grants as a Constitutional fight over powers of the purse & whether presidents can disregard Congressional appropriations. It is that. But also at stake is the fundamental validity of government contracts! I see much less discussion on this... 🧵
Democracy doesn’t mean whoever wins a slight plurality in the national vote gets to rewrite every American institution to satisfy their own whims. The president is not an elected king. If we let him become one, the project of American democracy is over.
“Trump just effectively shuttered the National Labor Relations Board, unilaterally halting enforcement actions & investigations. He also illegally fired one of the Democratic NLRB board members, leaving the agency with too few board members to take any new actions.” pluralistic.net/2025/01/29/w...
