Illustrator Arnold Lobel came out in the '70s. Lobel wrote, "Frog and Toad are really two aspects of myself." In The New Yorker, his daughter Adrianne Lobel suggested "that there’s another dimension to the series’ sustained popularity. Frog and Toad are of the same sex, and they love each other."
