“They tried to weaken higher education, but instead they built a movement to fight for the future...
They can attack our institutions, but they cannot stop our movement….We will not stop until we have the higher education system and the democracy we all deserve.”
— Todd Wolfson, AAUP President
Ever thought “What the heck is going on with the ‘civic’ centers popping up at public universities?” Well, @biblioracle.bsky.social has a great look. Hint: It's not pretty, and stinks of grift...

Our University community must be free to protest without fear of silencing or discipline by BU administrators except under preexisting, content-neutral rules, applied with restraint and judgment, sensitive to context and appropriate to the educational mission of the University. Instead SJP’s experience demonstrates that BU manipulated its own rules to restrict student speech that the University considered politically risky, rather than embracing earnest student expression as an important product of the University’s educational purposes.
Boston University made headlines for removing Pride Flags. But those censorship chops were honed where
censorship chops are often honed: Palestine. @aaup.org

"Put plainly: the chief academic officer told the faculty’s elected representatives that their unanimous vote would not change his course of action. This disregard for shared governance has been a pattern throughout Provost Wormley’s tenure—first as interim, now as permanent Provost."
NEW: Preliminary findings released today from the AAUP’s annual Faculty Compensation Survey reveal that real wages for full-time faculty decreased & remain below pre-pandemic levels.
The FCS is the largest independent source of data on faculty salaries. Check out preliminary findings below.

NEW:
“While the PSU board & administrators point to a "structural deficit," these cuts are not a financial necessity; they are a political choice that prioritizes administrative bloat & capital projects over the livelihoods of dedicated public servants.”

listening to KLF "The Chill" thanks to @michaelehayden.bsky.social over at Posting Through It podcast. The YouTube comments alone are a testament. Thanks for the introduction! I have a lot of writing to do this month, and now I have a companion for the grind! www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWeb...
whew...I'm glad to hear that it's ok to kink-shame hypocrites and those co-habbitating with fascists!
You fascist bound to lose!! Q
Did a March Madness pool with the fam--picked teams and get 1pt per win. My criteria? "No schools that have had major violations of academic freedom recently." It was a tough. No Texas Tech, no Texas A&M, no UT, no UNC, no UF, no Clemson, no Gonzaga, no St. Johns. And surely missing some. @aaup.org
This is an amazing film. Clarifies what we are fighting for. For students, like those in the film, to find (and be) themselves, grow intellectually, and be passionate about what they love. Authoritarian hacks--like Rufo and Corcoran-- don't understand that. Or they do, and are deeply frightened.
Ug. You’re right. “Moments” doesn’t actually mean “seven months of championship level baseball…”
Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series?! It’s written in the stars! Bring it on! @orioles.com

Academic freedom concerns spark a surge of professors joining the AAUP.
"People are angry, frustrated, but also kind of mobilized." — Ira Dworkin, VP of Texas A&M AAUP
Check out this new report published today providing the first in-depth, industry-wide examination of how #academicfreedom has been written into collective bargaining agreements across American higher ed.
👀
This report is useful for anyone hoping to collectively bargain meaningful AF protections.
The relationship between academic freedom and collective bargaining in colleges and universities is not well studied. This report...is required reading for anyone wishing to chart the contemporary landscape of higher education in the United States.

2/It's the first in-depth, industry-wide study of how academic freedom is written into CBAs, including analysis of 45 contracts showing the range of academic freedom language. Let's bargain AF! (And if you don't have a union? unionize to bargain AF!) @aaup.org @aft.org

“Abolishing tenure cripples scientific & creative research...
This sends a strong message that top-tier academics seeking employment at Oklahoma universities should look elsewhere immediately. Why pursue a job here under such a repressive climate?”
— Michael Givel, OU AAUP President
Collective Bargaining is essential… @local6741.bsky.social @aaup.org @aft.org @aaupmason.bsky.social
Don’t cut higher ed workers out!
States like FL, TX, NC and GA, which have done the most to degrade academic freedom at public universities, are now trying to create their own state-run accrediting agency, the CPHE. What could go wrong? We have until March 4 to send in feedback.
