"Continuous recording of a vertebrate’s adult life from adolescence until death would provide a complete view into the behavioral architecture of aging."

IMAGE SHOWS GRAPHIC OF CORNELL LAB OF ORNITHOLOGY PHYLOGENY EXPLORER TOOL.
MAJOR NEWS! We just launched an awesome new tool! The illustrated Birds of the World Phylogeny Explorer lets users trace any bird’s lineage, compare species relationships, and explore major evolutionary milestones with a click of a button. SHARE and EXPLORE! birdsoftheworld.org/bow/news/phy...
In comparison, the placenta evolved only once in mammals, restricting our ability to understand how it has coevolved with other traits in this group.
This was a cool study to be involved in, we found no evidence of a placenta being linked to increased brain size in poeciliid fishes. Placenta and placenta like structures have evolved independently in poeciliid fishes, allowing for comparative analyses url: academic.oup.com/jeb/article/...

Our paper is published today in Current Biology and is featured on the cover!
We report a neat, and somewhat counter-intuitive, finding: higher-ranking baboons get less and more interrupted night-time rest.
How is behavioural diversity affected by human-induced change? Oded Berger-Tal and co-authors review how anthropogenic disturbances can impact behavioural diversity through the evolutionary forces of selection, flow, mutation and drift. doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Are animals self aware? Intuitively many seem to be, but how do we experimental test this prediction? Using a novel version of the mirror-mark test we claim to have empirical evidence demonstrating self awareness in the cleaner fish. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
There is still time to submit your abstract and apply for a travel award!

Thanks Bob, I really enjoyed your new Proc B paper. My experience has been very little (if any) consideration or knowledge of behavioural diversity in management policy or applied research. But lots of potential!
Darwin speculated that it was energetically costly to be an hermaphrodite. He thought that might explain why they were relatively rare in animals. Our paper out today tested this conjecture for the first time.

Fisheries can drive selection, but what about small-scale ornamental fisheries? Our new study shows Amazonian fishes interact w/ traps in species- & environment-specific ways, hinting at overlooked selective potential. Led by @marpineda.bsky.social Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

Happy to have this new preprint up: Disturbance provides limited respite for native fish against invaders
We assess the potential for coexistence between threatened native galaxiid fishes & invasive trout, & find native fish prevail only at high disturbance regimes. Even then, it's dicy.
