Most of all, I want to thank the second Berlin patient.
It’s his story before it’s anyone else’s.
Days like today remind me why we do this. HIV has taken so many lives and still takes far too many. Stories like this give hope that we can actually bring this epidemic to an end.

Our paper on the second Berlin patient came out in Nature today and I’m really happy we can share this story on World AIDS Day. I want to thank everyone on the team and all co-authors for their work over the years.

Our preprint is out! Q4ddPCR is a 4-target ddPCR assay for high-resolution HIV reservoir profiling validated on proviral sequences and across multiple cohorts. It supports HIV cure trials where precision matters.
Thanks to Rachel Scheck, Brad Jones & all co-authors.

Being here in Africa, with so many colleagues, community leaders, scientists, and advocates, feels more important than ever and the call to action has never felt more urgent. Looking forward to the conversations, connections and momentum we’ll build in the days ahead.
IAS 2025 has officially kicked off in Kigali. The opening session was very moving and powerful reminder of what’s at stake. Strong (mostly female) voices from across the HIV response, and a powerful community protest (“We will not be erased”) resonated deeply.
We are currently recruiting a bioinformatics/computational biology postdoc to join the infrastructure project of a newly funded large research consortium (SFB-TRR) on Circadian Medicine between Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Universität zu Lübeck ⌚ ⏰ ⏱️ 🕰️ !
When governments stop funding clinical guidelines, who will step in?
Guideline support by independent governmental scientific bodies aims to ensure high quality & independence from commercial interests.
These recommendations provide critical guidance for health care providers worldwide. #HIV #NIH
Wow! Very interesting decision by @nature.com towards transparent peer review. Also preparing emotionally for the 20-page rebuttals ahead! ☺️
The image shows the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt on display on the National Mall in Washington D.C. in October 1996. This particular display, from October 11-13, 1996, was the last time the entire quilt was shown in its entirety, covering the vast expanse of the National Mall from the Washington Monument towards the U.S. Capitol. It featured over 40,000 panels and drew approximately 1.2 million visitors.

Our group was recognized as one of the “Best Research Environments of 2024” by @jungeakademie.bsky.social and Volkswagenstiftung. We didn’t get lucky in the raffle for the prize money but we’re proud of the recognition and even more proud of team Gaebler Lab that made it possible!🙏🎊👏🎉
Thank you! InfektioFam 💫
Honored that our lab made the shortlist for Best Research Environment. Awesome initiative by Junge Akademie and proud of the incredible Gaebler Lab team and the entire Infectious Disease Department at Charité/BIH that makes this place what it is! 👏 @libuchauer.bsky.social @sanderlab.bsky.social
It was such a delight to host Dr. Rochelle P. #Walensky, former director of the CDC during the COVID crisis at #Charité Berlin. Thank you for sharing inspiring lessons and personal insights with the Charité community.
We all need to speak up for #HealthEquity and Evidence-based health policies.
"We condemn the censoring of science!". Powerful opening words from Diane Havlir for #croi2025
"Young researchers, we have your back. Community, we are with you"
Hell yes!!!
A powerful talk by Rebecca Denison, founder of WORLD and woman living with HIV.
We can't go back to the days without treatment access.
Silence is death.
And courage is a decision.
The hall erupted in a standing ovation.

“Instead of a careful handover, we’re being pushed off a cliff,” said Kate Rees, an epidemiologist with South Africa’s Anova Health Institute, which has also seen its funding terminated.

Two weeks ago, we proudly showed the German Bundestag - this imperfect yet fundamental symbol of democracy - to friends from New York. I never could have imagined the scenes that unfolded there today. We (will) remember! 🇪🇺
