Simon Communities of Ireland are calling for a radical shift from emergency responses to prevention. We need to look beyond the numbers and confront the human reality they represent. Cross-departmental collaboration and resourcing is the only way to prevent homelessness.
We have reached a point were the homeless figures have become a predictable, monthly data release, a near-constant presence in the headlines, an issue that is somehow both urgent and strangely routine. As a nation, this is not something we should be proud of.
The latest figures show that 17,308 people were living in emergency accommodation in February 2026. A staggering increase of 1,930 since February last year.
The consistent monthly trend of the increase in these figures begs the question: Has homelessness become normalised?

This piece of legislation will support rehabilitation and make a real difference to many people supported by Simon Community services across the country.
Once enacted, this Bill will widen the range of minor convictions that can become spent, or removed from an individual's record, after a period of time without reoffending. It will also ensure that rehabilitation periods are proportionate to the offense.
Simon Communities of Ireland warmly welcomes the progression of the long-awaited and overdue Spent Convictions Bill.
We are grateful to Senator Lynn Ruane for championing this issue for so many years and to Minister Jim O'Callaghan.

The Government’s current plan is failing single adults, with potentially long-term impacts on their mental & physical wellbeing.
While the new Housing Plan has a welcome focus on children & family homelessness, we cannot allow for single adults to be by-passed when investing in solutions.
17,112 people living in emergency accommodation.
Since January 2025, the data shows a staggering increase of 1,826 people in emergency accommodation.
It is unacceptable that this crisis is deepening, particularly among single adults who are the largest cohort in emergency beds.

One of the levers available to Government is the enforcement of regulations around short-term lets. This could potentially bring thousands of properties back into the market, particularly in the West of Ireland 🏠

Each year, there is typically a reduction in December figures due to the Christmas period. This decrease often reflects people being temporarily offered respite by friends or family.
Although the figures are lower than the previous report, this still marks an increase of 12.6% since December 2024.
Black and white photo of a child’s toy bunny sits scattered amongst other toys. Yellow text overlays the image reading: 16,734 People in emergency homeless accommodation.
16,734 people were living in emergency accommodation in December 2025, including 5,188 children 📉
While any reduction in homelessness is welcome, it must be sustained, continuous and on a larger scale. There are serious concerns that numbers are set to rise again in the coming months.
