WhereFromtoComment Automator Action — Uncaught Exception Want to sort downloaded files by the URLs you downloaded them from? This Automator action copies the links to the Comments field so you can see them and sort your downloads by where they came from.

Hey #mac users of Bluesky, I have released my first utility. It’s an Automator Action that copies the URLs hidden in the metadata of your downloads into the Comments field so you can see & sort them. Donationware.

A New Analogy for AI: Astroturf — Uncaught Exception When debating AI use, people use analogies to explain their point of view. Here's one I’ve never seen: Astroturf! It never replaced real grass, and AI won’t replace traditional methods.

Do you really think people that use AI want it to replace making things traditionally? I never read “put down your pencil”. Here’s a new analogy: Astroturf. It’s artificial but wasn’t invented to replace all grass worldwide.

The Chef Analogy (and why it's broken) — Uncaught Exception We’ve all heard the Chef Analogy when people discuss using AI: ordering a meal —even with changes— doesn’t make you the chef. Here’s a short piece on why the analogy fails.

AI critics keep returning to The Chef Analogy when they are arguing against the use of #AI.
It’s time for something better. Here are some thoughts on why it’s broken:

That makes me sad

I always thought blocking was for when people harass you. Isn’t muting for controlling your feed?

Yeah I’d like to see some data on people who claim that AI talked them out of self-harm, whether that’s self-reported or not.

So many emotionally charged words and phrases are used by people who disapprove of #AI software! I have collected the best of them for almost a year, plus insults from both sides. Enjoy!

Part 3 of my #Music Software Installers Comparison is out now. (No report cards in this one though. Formatting in Squarespace takes too long.)
Anyway if you’ve been following the series, let me know what you think.

Here’s another of my Venn-style diagrams I’ve been working on. It’s one of the most complex so far: #Apple Product Ownership. Some of their products require others to use. Which zone do you land in? Let me know if there are any errors, this one is hard!

AI at Apple — Uncaught Exception A diagram about the real reason why Apple didn't get their AI rollout right.

I was thinking about why Apple didn’t get their AI right the first time. It’s a people problem— they don’t have enough developers good at it. This diagram breaks it down. $2AUD for a printable PDF and JPEGs you can use in a presentation.

I don’t suppose any of you music makers own SoundParticles MiniDust? I tried using it in Logic for the first time and it keeps crashing. I want to see if it’s just me.

Bad Reviews of Your App — Uncaught Exception Sometimes people buy your app, use it, have a problem and immediately post a bad review. Why? Most haven't read the manual.

I was thinking about why people jump back on the App Store and post a bad review of an app that they had problems with. Most of them don't read the manual. Here's a #diagram to show the proportions. High-res version is $2 AUD if you want to print it.

It looks like they saw that people were already using ChatGPT or Claude at work and thought: hey we should get them to use Copilot instead.

Gunpowder was found to be able to propel bullets, then propellant allowed missiles to kill people and now to send satellites to help us communicate and probes to explore the solar system.
It’s what we choose to do with the tech that counts.

Frustrated little dude gripping a pencil saying “how do I pack this down into something I can actually share?” While swirling rainbows labeled “INFINITE POTENTIAL” float around them.

Little dude frowns at a tiny grey box, exclaiming “all that work for THIS?!”

Little dude shoves the grey box into another little guy’s hands; Frowning, stomping off, and saying “Here you go, I made this, it sucks.”

Second little dude cracks open the box, swirling rainbows project out onto their face.

Second little dude stares in awe at all the swirling rainbows now floating around them.

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

You’ll probably call this “whataboutism” but a lot of things don’t need to exist but still do.
