New Nature Cities comment on how increasing groundwater salinity and levels pose threats to coastal urban infrastructure. Such processes should be included in the IPPC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. Thanks to all coauthors rdcu.be/ezw0x
Come on @umassamherst.bsky.social let’s step up and show our leadership
This is a horrible decision that will impact us all in the US. One example is the tremendous research in the hydrological sciences that will be lost.
The EPA and Big Oil Are celebrating. The Pacific is not. A super El Niño may be building — possibly the strongest in 140 years. On top of the hottest decade ever recorded. Here's what that means.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @davidboutt.bsky.social on the interplay between hydrology and lithium ore extraction in the context of groundwater and mining use: the Lithium Triangle region of the Andes; groundflow modelling and hydrogeology; flow dynamics; evaporative losses; and mining footprints.

It was awesome talking with Ian about our recent work modeling groundwater and estimating freshwater over the US.
Drought a huge concern this summer. Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) by state for March 2026 had 6 states with their worst drought on record, with 22 others experiencing a top-10 worst drought. Only Michigan had an above-average lack of drought. From: www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monit...

2-5 weeks!
We will
Miss seeing u Nick!
I always love showing these movies in my hydro classes. The students really love finding cool patterns like the monsoons tropical cyclones atmospheric rivers.
What will happen to the 82 USFS experimental forests around the country? Many sites have decades-long experiments that are tracking how forests are changed by timber harvesting practices and climate change. As I say here, “you can't just pick up an experimental forest site and move it to SLC.”
Air Canada plane from Montreal crashed. Photo from Chris Pal.
My husband was on this flight this evening. His plane crashed. He’s ok. He helped others get off the plane. #AirCanada
He was in the row behind the emergency exit. A passenger was able to get it open. He climbed on the wing and slid off, helping other reluctant passengers to slide off, promising to catch them. This happened before the plane tilted.
"Typically, we don't consider summer weather to be normal in winter.”!!!!!
Five climate scientists, five quotes about this Mach heat wave:
“It’s uncharted territory.”
“There’s no analog.”
"Typically, we don't consider summer weather to be normal in winter.”
“Once (records) happen, they can happen again.”
“There's a very clear-eyed picture of what we face this summer.”
Checking in on #groundwater #Mass #drought recovery after snow melt and big rains this week. Interior has moved into normal range and fully recovered. Cape Cod has a ways to go, but the needle is heading in the right direction. @efisherwx.bsky.social @climatechris.bsky.social
And the wind???
Map of projected temperature anomalies next Thursday across the western U.S. from the ECMWF ensemble. The entire map is bright red and pink, indicative of extreme to record-breaking March warmth. Some location will be 25-30F degrees above average, with a few locations warming over 35F (!) above average.
All signs continue to point to an exceptional, long-duration, and record-breaking to (in some cases) record-shattering March heatwave initially centered across U.S. Southwest but expanding to much broader region next week. This is effectively a full-on summer heatwave in March.
Excited to share some new work using SWOT satellite data to understand the dynamics of small groundwater-dominated lakes. Demonstrates baseflow supply dynamics at regional scale, providing new GW-focused remote sensing data for resource management

OMG this!
A small point of clarification is that all the precipitation does not become runoff. A significant fraction of the precipitation is stored in the soil and shallow aquifers and is delayed in delivery to streams. I just want to make sure its clear that this is how hydrology works
Chris Soulsby recognized with AGU Langbein lecture
Maby congrats Chris!
He will present his lecture next week at @agu.org 2025 #AGU25
www.abdn.ac.uk/news/24924/
The extended lab group will be at @agu.org in New Orleans next week. Catch our team and collaborators in Oral and Poster Presentations across the week on topics from lithium and water from New England to Alaska and places in between. @umasshydro.bsky.social @umasscns.bsky.social
looking forward to this!
