Looking forward to going to Glasgow tomorrow to speak at a conference about the amazing Gabriela Cunninghame Graham - writer, traveller, mystic, socialist.

A nice review from Lisa Hamer for #choiceofdarkness
'a fascinating read, the research in this book really comes through....I couldn’t put it down, I love reading true crime and although it’s listed as historical fiction it reads more factual than not.'
My best books about guilt and suspense #choiceofdarkness

Graphic with a black textured background and bold yellow and white text. At the top is a white ‘Mayor of London’ lodo and a yellow box that says ‘Update.’ Main text reads: ‘Violent crimes resulting in injury have fallen in every borough in the 12 months ending August 2025 compared to the previous 12 months.’ Small text at the bottom: ‘Source: MPS recorded crime data.’
Violent crime with injury is down in every London borough thanks to the collective efforts of the police and London's Violence Reduction Unit.
But one death or one crime is one too many - so we’ll keep working with partners and the government to drive down crime and make London safer for everyone.
Saw Oscar Wilde's rarely-performed 'Vera or The Nihilists' @brocjacktheatre, his only serious play, and I reviewed it for @playstosee, 'a rare chance to see an important piece of theatre history' history.playstosee.com/reviews/uk-reviews/londo...

A four star review of Choice of Darkness from Lady J Reads www.instagram.com/lady_j_reads/
'I could almost see Henry slipping from the detective's hands time and time again.
Will Frank ever find enough evidence?
Will he ever get his redemption?'

In 1978, Pillsbury Company sued SCREW for $50 MILLION for trademark dilution for comic strips depicting the Pillsbury Doughboy banging the bound-and-gagged Doughgirl, culminating in a yeast infection.
We won, and the legal precedent for explicit parody was established. You're welcome, Axel Braun! 😜

In the West, certainties are under attack with the loss of reproductive rights in the US and the rise of misogynistic influencers and a philosophy of perverted women-hating in incel communities. If Femen are angry, I get it. I just wonder: why isn't everyone else?
In the Middle East extreme Islamists were weaponising rape and sex slavery and over a short period - four years - this was shown to be not just a shocking aberration produced in war: civil governments in Iran and Afghanistan created societies contemptuous of any notion of womens' rights.
In education, employment, reproductive and legal rights it was a tale of advancement.
By the time the paperback came out in 2016 there were signs of reversal, not least the spectacle of grotesque man-babies like Trump, Modi and Putin asserting power.
When I published Women and the Vote: A World History in 2014 (OUP) it was a tale of progress (with setbacks). At that time the last countries where women had no political power, the Gulf States, were enfranchising women & even Saudi Arabia was accepting women in what local democracy existed there.
Femen and Pussy Riot are the natural inheritors of the outrage with which the suffragettes were greeted - by both conservative society and the staid 'constitutional' suffragists. They have dared to make a feminism which is more public and more defiant than what has gone before.
The problem with it was not so much its existence as the way it was introduced, driving the poorest (like small tradespeople with old, polluting vehicles) out of work. It's a classic example of a good policy badly delivered.

Reform was a puffed-up media bubble, like the SDP in the early 80s. As soon as the Falklands War came along, the SDP disappeared from political conversation though it had been vaunted as a supposed third force, taking votes from both sides.

Updated with a new introduction to mark the centenary of Benn’s birth, @jadadamsauthor.bsky.social explores his continuing legacy in 21st-century Britain.
