Quote from WSJ review “exuberant prose engages all our senses, beckoning us, the way a flower would a curious bee, into a world of hidden wonders”
Thank you, @chrisirmscher.bsky.social, for this review of How Flowers Made our World, in @wsj.com
Thomas essays are amazing, especially considering he wrote them in his spare time.
If you listen to the interview, the question was what books were influential. That book was influential for me as a teenager b4 college. In other interviews I've been accused of doing drive-by shootings on his work since I don't agree with his takes on biology, religion and other cultures ✌️
Interesting convergence though. Biology has moved beyond the idea of selfishness and individual genes being the foundational biological reality (like any science, ideas move on), but that book really woke my young self up to the incredible beauty of thinking about life in terms of evolution.
A joy to join Alan Alda to chat about flowers, scicomm, and why "weeds" give me confidence (com-fidere = trusting together). Also: Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek meets Richard Dawkins' Selfish Gene in an impressionable teenage mind

Excited to do a bit of intellectual photosynthesis with new botanical books by a couple of the best writers in our field, @robertmoor.com and @dghaskell.bsky.social. 🌲 🌼 🌱
Thank you, @rsmythfreelance.bsky.social, for these generous words. Working on this book upended my experience of the world, and transformed how I think/feel about life's narratives. I'm so glad that some of this comes through in the book's pages. Revolutionaries for real.
Thank you, Richard! You are very generous. I'm very happy to hear that these, ahem, florid tales resonated for you, and that the immensity of their contributions to the living Earth comes through in the book's pages.
What a pleasure to be in conversation about flowers and their many meanings with Daphne Chouliaraki Milner in @atmosmag.bsky.social, with marvelous art by Max Attila Bartsch

What an appalling headline and take. Perhaps the real news here is that NPR thanks the weird opinions of one economist are worth platforming. And that "we" needs to be used a little more carefully.
Bell shaped purple flower with red nectar at base
Blood red nectar. Attracts their pollinators, geckos, who love red dots on a purple background. Birds are also attracted and steal nectar.

“If our descendants are still around in 100 million years, I predict that they will be flower people. They will have figured out how to work in deep cooperation with flowering plants so that they and the rest of the ecosystem can thrive.”
David Haskell's new book, How Flowers Made Our World, is a great read anytime of year, but especially for spring. Highly recommended if you're into gardening, plants, Earth history and/or the weirdness of life 🌎 🧪
Thank you, Jennifer!
I had a great conversation with @jenniferweeks83.bsky.social about floral creativity, now published in edited version at @yalee360.bsky.social

Wild Fungarium is a must-visit in Edinburgh, Scotland. They have a wonderfully curated collection of wildlife and nature books, as well as toys, gifts, seeds. I highly recommend a long stop at this new independent bookshop. Thank you for your welcome, James!
"He is a lively writer with an appealingly light touch, but his message about ‘the astonishing creativity and productivity of flowers’ is a serious one."
