the anthony davis trade doesn't guarantee the mavericks will be a good team anytime soon, but it does give them something they didn't have before: a chance. my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social www.dmagazine.com/sports/2026/...

the mavericks are a very weird team, beating good teams and losing to bad ones. there are three categories that help explain the madness and I wrote about it for
@dmagazine.bsky.social www.dmagazine.com/sports/2026/...
Ryan Nembhard is solving the Mavericks math problem. For @dmagazine.bsky.social I wrote about how the Mavericks two-way rookie point guard fixes the Mavericks possession efficiency issues with his shooting, passing, and general steadiness running the offense. www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
the start to the mavericks season has been so galling that it should inspire deep reflection from within the organization. my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social goes over what's gone wrong, and what should be the next steps in building around cooper flagg www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
The great and fearless @boweman55.bsky.social wrote the Mavs piece everyone else will be writing in a few weeks: it's already time to shift the focus to the future. Don't believe him? Read the excerpt, then read the whole piece. It's sobering stuff.

last week mark cuban said the mavs season will go based on how dereck lively and anthony davis shoot threes. instead of focusing on the soundbite, my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about what realistic ways the mavericks big men can help the team's offense www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about brandon williams, who was a two-way surprise and turned into a potential building block for a mavericks team desperate for guard play following the luka doncic trade. dallas will need williams again next season www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
yeah I think that's probably how they feel, but considering how committed Nico has been publicly talking about winning a championship right now, their offseason has been quiet. I think they want to project that they're a contender while cooling off a little internally now that they have flagg
every public comment from nico harrison since the luka trade has indicated he is trying to win a championship ASAP. yet dallas has had a quiet and modest offseason. my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about how the mavs aren't acting like a team that's all-in www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
We don't know if the Mavericks are done making moves yet. But if they are, then a team that put itself in win-now mode is repositioning itself into something different.
Here's @boweman55.bsky.social on how the team's words & actions tell us two different things:

d'angelo russell isn't perfect, far from it, but the mavericks don't need a perfect fit from their mid-level exception. my latest @dmagazine.bsky.social explains why russell makes the most sense of the mavericks available free agent options www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
Cooper Flagg is going to save the Mavericks from where they were heading. That doesn't mean Dallas' roster is ready to accommodate him just yet. Here's @boweman55.bsky.social with the breakdown of what Flagg will bring and what the Mavs must do to build around him:

The Mavericks aren't a playoff team this year. How much optimism should you have for next season? @boweman55.bsky.social dropped a 1,900-word deep dive on what this roster might deliver in 2025-26, with one big caveat: prepare for anything this offseason.

You may not have noticed, but the Mavericks found an offensive identity playing without their big men. So what happens now that those big men are getting healthy? Smart stuff as always from the great @boweman55.bsky.social :

The team has been in Dallas for 45 years, and things have never been more dire than this. What if I told you that rock bottom hasn’t even arrived? @boweman55.bsky.social
Let's call the last month what it is: the worst moment in the history of Mavericks basketball. And if you think that's rock bottom, well, @boweman55.bsky.social has sobering news for you.
Here's the big-picture piece you need to read, even if you don't want to

I don't know when is necessarily the best time to discuss what's still a very interesting Mavs team, but we're going to give it a shot, because none of this is on the players themselves & because @boweman55.bsky.social is damn good at analyzing hoops. Smart stuff:

my latest for D Magazine went live this morning: wrote about how crucial the mavericks center tandem is, what hasn't worked, and what can improve as the mavericks get healthy and try to reclaim their contender status. www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
The Mavericks' top priority is getting healthy, but what happens once they do? @boweman55.bsky.social says the team's next step forward begins with optimizing Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford.

some news: I will be doing some mavs writing for D Magazine! Grateful to @mikelikessports.bsky.social for the opportunity, and my first piece went live this morning. It's about Jason Kidd's experimentations and what it means for both the regular and postseason www.dmagazine.com/sports/2024/...
Been a big fan of @boweman55.bsky.social's hoops brain for a long time, so I'm thrilled to have him on board as our newest Mavs writer! Here's his first, on Jason Kidd's delicate dance of balancing experimentation with Dallas' need for top-three seeding:

he's shooting poorly both due to his health and adjusting to a different role with the ball in his hands less. my assumption is hopefully with the time off he has his legs back and the good shooting returns.
I wrote the recap of last night's impressive win against denver for mavs moneyball, and here's what stood out to me the most from the game www.mavsmoneyball.com/2024/11/23/2...
I don't really have a hard translation of possessions to minutes, but I looked it up and they've played 127 minutes together.
both washington and lively are making cases for being all-defense players this season, although obviously we're still very early into the season. but so far, that duo has been absolutely elite.
pj washington and dereck lively have shared the floor for 252 possessions for the mavericks, according to cleaning the glass. in those 252 possessions, the mavericks net-rating is +10.3, their defensive rating is 100.4. for reference, OKC currently has the league's best defense at 103.4.
