I fell asleep to the BSG engine noise for a while, that was nice if incredibly dorky.

New Permanent Under-Secretary Appointed at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Sir Oliver (Olly) Robbins has been appointed as the new Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Let's stretch credulity and accept that Olly Robbins did go rogue on this one. Who then takes responsibility for appointing him?

"The Permanent Secretary for FCDO is appointed by the Foreign Secretary, with the approval of the Prime Minister."

Ah. Unfortunate.

True enough. The sort of person who definitely supports a lot of great left-wing ideas but is also Very Sensible so accepts that regrettably we can't have them yet. Maybe in another electoral cycle or two. Just hang in there and don't do anything reckless like voting for an actual progressive party.

Interesting question about Labour councillors being to the left of the party, some definitely are and that's exacerbated by how much the central party has swung right in recent years. The membership has usually been to the left of the party. But obviously there are plenty of horrific ghouls as well.

Maybe a bit, but the bigger effect will be from being able to say "see, we can win here, now go on and vote for us in the general election too." The big problem for Green councillors and controlled councils will be funding, although hopefully there will be some things that can be improved anyway.
