Accessibility advocates have been hit exceptionally hard in the perpetual layoff era in tech.

I don’t think it’s a wild leap to connect that with the anti DEIA rhetoric

It also exposes how little businesses ever understood the ROI that comes from designing and building well.

Anyway, I respect your work and shall cease expanding the thread and intruding upon your time and attention.

But I do have the bias of having grown up around conversations about water in the West, so maybe it’s much less clear for folks unaware that the Colorado River isn’t just in Colorado. Unfortunately, I think that’s a problem this article and thread are not equipped to address.

I don’t find “Colorado basin” confusing and it doesn’t take a lot of scanning for context or even following links to confirm that it’s the whole watershed. I know this is a pedant site and indulge that side of myself here at times, but I think anyone confused should read the article.

The subheading says “seven basin states,” so yeah it’s about the whole watershed, not just one single state.

I have read way more wound care product pamphlets than I should have to, and it’s really gross that this is now a thing we have to do because making sure we have supplies so our wounds can heal is now out of providers’ scopes. But we sure get judged if we don’t do it right!

I’m only allergic to 3M medical adhesives so far. But I pack silicone tape and Hypafix with me for medical visits because it’s a crapshoot as to whether any facility I go to will have multiple different brands of medical adhesive products or just the one that makes my skin blister and fall off.

My school banned backpacks as well. We were allowed to bring our homework to and from school in backpacks, but this makes it confusing as to how the backpack ban had any safety utility at all.

I can imagine an inexperienced traveler accidentally not building in enough extra time to navigate the system, but cutting it close to avoid a wait at the gate is not something I imagine many would do without very good reason (like trying to minimize pressure sores or using the plane bathroom). 4/4

Safe travel is a high-stakes activity for disabled people, and missing a flight is a financial hit and logistics nightmare many if not most of us can’t really afford. 3/4

Being early to the gate is a great relief for the disabled travelers I know because it gives you time to prep for the next stage of things, including, if needed, the details of assisted boarding and the safe transport of any mobility aids and other crucial equipment. 2/4

In my experience and that of other folks with varying disabilities, we usually have to show up *much* earlier thanks to all of the barriers to accessibility in airports. The ways a disabled person ends up cutting it close are frequently not because they didn’t try to be early. 1/4

It's great to feel hope, it really is. But when it comes down to it, hope is actually a choice removed from feeling hopeful. Hope is choosing to act like what you do will matter tomorrow, whether or not you feel like that's true or if you personally will see tomorrow.

And if it’s you advocating for yourself after having been harmed it’s just an additional pile of awful on top of everything.

And punished by the extreme energy-suck of trying to change a system that doesn’t want to be changed, knowing that getting any change to happen will take an enormous amount of time and effort and coalition-building, akin to a second job that also makes you radioactive to your coworkers.

Personally I think when a world leader announces “Tune in tonight at 8pm Eastern to watch the world end” like it’s the fucking season premiere of Roseanne we should have a different leader the next day.

This is stupid, obviously, these journalists should boycott this thing; but also this is very much not the first time Donald Trump attended, because there was famously that time Obama roasted him so hard he decided to run for president.

No, eugenics is still bad. Caring about others is still good. Needless deaths are horrible.

“We have a population that has learned — correctly — that pharmaceutical companies have lied, that institutions have failed them…But the response has not been better skepticism. It has been the migration of trust from one set of financially motivated actors to another.” Great point here

Let’s be for real. Those folks don’t support any authors. Real heads know the book game is a hustle these days. Support the work you want to see in the world or there won’t be anything left to support.

Eugene Sandow: The Original Fitness Influencer? | HISTORY The bodybuilder built a global wellness brand around his chiseled physique. Then World War I derailed his career.

It’s maybe not surprising that modern fitness influencers are still using Sandow’s techniques, with some updates thanks to the decline of circus sideshows and the rise of social media

Eugen Sandow: a body worth immortalising | Natural History Museum Discover Eugen Sandow, the Victorian bodybuilder whose statue went on display at the Museum. He is known as the father of modern bodybuilding.

Eugen Sandow, the father of modern bodybuilding, was one example of how a muscled physique became an aesthetic choice more than practical necessity. Not coincidentally, the idea of a certain kind of perfect physical and mental masculinity was coupled with eugenics.
