There's a lot to say about 1,400 years of the Fenian tradition! Thank you to @bcirishstudies for hosting an enjoyable and thought-provoking discussion of our Project Director Natasha Sumner's book Heroes of the Gael!

Thanks to Kneecap, we’ve been ag machnamh ar the term ‘Fenian’ and its links to Fionn agus na leideanna.
For more information on the term’s origins, check out Natasha Sumner’s Heroes of the Gael (PUP, 2026) ~ press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...

And here's Cloughregan itself, as well as the view of Carraig Ó gCoinneall from the garden in which the rock stands!
(Thank you to Ciara ní Rían and Shane Kenny for the information and footage!)
Have you ever heard of the story of Carraig Ó gCoinneall (Carrigogunnell/The Rock of the Candle) in Co. Limerick? 🕯️🕯️
You can still see Cloughregan to this day!

While Patrick is baptizing Oisín, he unknowingly rests his staff on Oisín’s foot, which begins to bleed from the pressure. When Patrick asks him why he did not say anything, he replies that he thought it was part of the baptismal process!
Nuair a fhiafraíonn Pádraig de cén fáth nár inis sé dó faoi, is é an freagra a thugann Oisín ná gur cheap sé gur chuid den bhaisteadh i bhí i gceist leis.
Déanann an scéal seo cur síos ar an lá ar bhaist Naomh Pádraig Oisín. Agus Pádraig á bhaisteadh, cuireann sé a mhaide anuas ar chos Oisín i ngan fhios dó féin agus tosaíonn Oisín ag cur fola mar gheall ar an mbrú ar a chos.
Lá fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh! ☘️

When Oisín was old, blinded with age and his strength nearly gone, he used to tell #StPatrick stories about the days of the Fianna. Let's just say Patrick was far from the easiest of audiences to sway! 🐦⬛☘️

In this fragment, Oisín asks Patrick if he can admit his hounds into heaven. Patrick replies that none may enter heaven without being admitted by God. Well…he didn't say no, did he?

Sa mhir seo, cuireann Oisín ceist ar Phádraig an ligfidh sé a chuid cúnna isteach sna flaithis. Deir Pádraig nach féidir le duine ar bith dul ar neamh gan cead a fháil ó Dhia. Bhuel, ní dúirt sé nach raibh cead acu dul chun na bhflaitheas…😌🐾

In this proverb, Fionn suggests that the weather will always balance itself out (e.g. a wet spring will be mediated by a dry summer).

Cothromaíocht na hAimsire | The balancing out of the weather.
De réir an tseanfhocail seo, deir Fionn go n-aimsíonn an aimsir cothramaíocht i gcónaí (cuir i gcás, cúitíonn earrach fliuch agus samhradh tirim a chéile de ghnáth).

(Following his return to Ireland from Tír na nÓg, Oisín met St. Patrick and thus began the famous conversation between saint and hero. Over the next month, we’ll be posting some of our favourite parts of their yap to end all yaps!)
Nuair a d’fhill Oisín ar Éirinn tar éis éachtraí Thír na nÓg, bhuail sé le Naomh Pádraig a’s mar sin, thosaigh an comhrá cáiliúil idir naomh a’s laoch. Le linn na míosa seo chugainn, cuirfimid blúiríní den agallamh idir Oisín a’s Pádraig suas ar ár meáin shóisialta! ☘️

If the Fianna could but impart one piece of wisdom for the Year of the Horse, they would probably say 'don't mount an unfamiliar horse unless you're absolutely cool with being galloped far out to sea and left on a mythical island you have no immediately obvious way off'.
Happy publication day Natasha!!! 🥳

Specific tombs and stones are often known locally as Leaba Dhiarmada agus Ghráinne (‘The Bed of Diarmuid and Gráinne’) on account of the belief that the couple once slept on the great stone slabs.
Throughout Ireland, numerous rocks, tombs and caves are pointed out as places where Diarmuid and Gráinne sought refuge while on the run from Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna.
