The full-day workshop will feature interactive sessions and presentations showcasing collaboration with #fishers in ongoing #bycatch projects including CIBBRiNA, @marinebeacon.bsky.social, REDUCE, MarineGuardian and ECO-CATCH. [2/3]
On 20th April, CIBBRiNA will be hosting a workshop at this year's European Cetacean Society Conference, taking place in Dundee, Scotland. [1/3]
The latest trials, run in collaboration with Danish #fishers, show that the PearlNets neither affect target #fish catches nor require more handling time. This is hugely positive news, because it could make them a win-win for reducing #bycatch of ETP species while being practical for fishers. 3/
The PearlNet works by enhancing the acoustic visibility of gillnets by adding small acrylic glass spheres to the nets. It's designed to enable dolphins, porpoises, & certain species of whale to recognize the nets as a physical barrier, which could lower the risk of their entanglement. 2/
A paper co-authored by researchers from our partners Thünen Institute & DTU Aqua provides important new insights into the feasibility of using "PearlNets" with #fishing gear in the #BalticSea. 1/
With initial observations showing positive results, the next step is to trial the gear at sea in a herring fishery, planned from May this year.

The team recently conducted trials of the device in a specially designed tank at Flume Tank North Sea, which allowed the performance of the gear to be assessed in a controlled environment. [3/4]
Following initial tests in August 2025, a team of researchers and scientists from DPPO, Egersund Trawl DK and Institute of Marine Research were able to evaluate and improve the prototypes, to ensure the excluder panels effectively prevent bycatch without reducing target herring catch. [2/4]
CIBBRiNA’s latest excluder gear tests have been featured in Nordic industry outlet Fish Break! 🌊
The CIBBRiNA Case Study 7 team have been busy developing a new excluder device to reduce the #bycatch of endangered, threatened and protected (#ETP) species in pelagic #fisheries. [1/4]
Since its creation in 2019, MSC’s Ocean Stewardship Fund has awarded $8.8million to support over 200 fisheries and projects worldwide, their varied list of projects including several focused on bycatch assessment and mitigation.

As a Stakeholder Advisory Board member, the MSC support CIBBRiNA’s efforts to reduce and where possible eliminate bycatch of endangered, threatened and protected (ETP) species. [2/3]
Have you heard of the Ocean Stewardship Fund? 🌊
The Marine Stewardship Council’s fund directly invests in projects that make improvement to fishing practices and marine science. [1/3]
Individuals with expertise in ocean-related fields are encouraged to apply before the deadline on March 10 2026. 🗓️

New article from CINEA spotlights CIBBRiNA’s collaborative work with #fishers! 📣
It introduces CIBBRiNA and our 8 case studies, through which we work to reduce #bycatch across different European #fisheries. Crucial to all that we do is the knowledge and involvement of the fishing industry. [1/2]
This research adds to a growing bank of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of artificial lights as a mitigation tool, not only for sharks and rays but also other kinds of marine animals such as #turtles.

Researchers worked with #fishers in the Gulf of California to experiment with four different types of light, each emitting different wavelengths. Results showed all the light types, especially orange, reduced bycatch of elasmobranchs but had no impact on how many commercial fish were caught.
[2/3]
A new study involving #CIBBRiNA Stakeholder Advisory Board member @noaa.gov shows that adding artificial lights to gillnets can significantly reduce #bycatch of elasmobranchs such as #sharks and rays, without reducing target catch. 🦈

Last year, CIBBRiNA hosted a joint workshop with @marinebeacon.bsky.social, #REDUCE and @icesmarine.bsky.social, on mitigation measures to minimise marine #turtle #bycatch. The report is now available, detailing key findings and recommendations for strengthening efforts to reduce turtle bycatch.
