Grateful for more attention on special education teacher retention and resilience - especially from such thoughtful researchers!

On the to-read list, published 18/12 by scientists out of the Netherlands, looks like it will be an interesting article. 🤓. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
The NRP Report (2000) found that independent silent reading may not be the most efficient use of instructional time.
In our study, we replicated the finding. We found that independent reading didn't contribute meaningfully to improved reading outcomes.

I’ve been to London a handful of times but never in November. People weren’t exaggerating when they said how beautiful it is in the lead up to the holidays. Loving the scenery ❤️📸🇬🇧
One of the things I love about living in Europe - in one train trip I’ve been in 4 countries. 🇳🇱🇧🇪🇫🇷🇬🇧

Over the last 5 months I have been updating my research on reading comprehension, both in terms of my methods and in terms of new studies. This process has led to me changing my position on the importance of knowledge and reading comprehension.

Excellent new article by Tina Novelli - for early phonics instruction, just drawing attention to the mouth movements facilitated learning. Check it out! doi.org/10.1007/s111...
Likewise Catherine 😊
Take notes and make organizers by hand! (Ok to draft via keyboarding). Students don’t just memorize better by hand but learn better overall writing by hand. Writing is learning. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
Looks like I will be dusting off my BlueSky ☺️
Looking forward to reading these 3 studies. 1) Ss of color may be under identified in screenings for reading disabilities 2) Auditory attn. deficits may affect learning trajectories for dyslexics 3) Early reading has an impact into adulthood, esp. for struggling Ss. www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...
"The writing difficulties of students with dyslexia can be partially attributed to their reading difficulties and can manifest in many ways in their writing, such as poor spelling, poor legibility, lack of diverse vocabulary, poor idea development, and/or lack of organization." #EduSky

It’s honestly rare I take a break from work or thinking about all topics related to work (okay, maybe I’m still thinking a bit 😜) but this recent holiday has been welcome and very much needed.
“what we know is that lang. & word reading need to be built across the curriculum so that we don’t neglect lang. early on, but we don’t want to neglect word reading later. It’s not a relay race, where word reading is handed off to language. It’s a parallel structure.” www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...
Stumbled on this 2002 RF Elmore piece: Hard Questions About Practice. 21 years later & I found it’s still relevant as discussions ⭕️ around the same systems issues. The only key diff. may be “distributed leadership” is more of a thing..and yes, I put it in quotations. www.ascd.org/el/articles/...
Great piece - it’s not curriculum resources OR teacher expertise but rather how the two come together. www.shankerinstitute.org/blog/compreh...
It was really a shame, that’s also not the first time her name has been used as support for certain arguments. I love listening to her speak and agree, she addressed it beautifully.
It was so nice to see you on this episode!
